I was wondering, with plex live tv and HDHR, can we watch more than the limited about of simultaneous watch on the HDHR? I was wondering if all 5 people in my family can watch on their tv
You don’t really specify what HDHR device you have or if you have more than one. The number of simultaneous views will be based on how many tuners you have with all of your HDHR devices. If you have a single HDHR for example a Connect or Extend device you have 2 tuners so you can have 2 simultaneous streams. As long as your 5 family members are watching the same 2 shows you may possibly be alright. Keep in mind though that if there are any scheduled recordings during the Live TV viewing using the HDHR the recording may be unable to utilize a tuner and the recording fail.
Seems like this might warrant a feature request especially if we get the ability down the road to allow friends on a shared Plex server to use the live tv feature. You wouldn’t want recordings to fail because a couple of friends were watching live tv and utilizing the tuners. Maybe the ability to specify a specific device as “recordings only” or assign permissions to not share a specific tuning device?
Allocating some tunners to only record has its issues to. What if you have nothing recording and have all of your live viewing tuners used. Why prevent live viewing if you aren’t recording something.
What would probably be better is to only enable live viewing for plex home users. And then simply plan appropriately.
It is actually a very interesting discussion because most devices that do DVR are attached to the display device. So you would always have more tunners then displays and they were easy to notify the client if a recording was started soon and let them decide what to do.
I would say when setting up the home user for sharing there should be an option to allow them to override scheduled recordings. If they have that option they should be prompted if there would be a shortage of tuners. In the case the user doesn’t have the option to override scheduled recordings their stream is simply terminated with a message saying to many scheduled records or something and there tv viewing was stoped to allow the recording.
I was asking because I was wondering if Plex Server was able to somehow scan all channels and make a software based tuner to allow more than the HDHR limitation. If that makes sense.
