Plex TV Series Fails When DVD Order is Empty on TVDB

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6486
Player Version#: 4.97.3

I have run into an issue with the new(ish) “Plex TV Series” agent. If the TVDB page for the series has all of the appropriate info for a series in the “Aired Order” tab, but it doesn’t have that same information in the “DVD Order” tab, then Plex TV Series will not match any metadata about the episodes.

For instance, I encountered this issue with the TV series “Bones” (from 2005). I have the first 2 seasons of Bones, and when I scanned my library, it applied generic names with no descriptions to each episode. For instance, the first episode ended up with a title of “Episode 1” with no description or other metadata.

I have fixed Seasons 1 & 2 of “Bones” on TVDB by copying the information from their “Aired Order” section to their “DVD Order” section, but it would be nice if maybe there was an option to either switch from DVD Order to Aired Order on each individual TV series within Plex, or if there was an option to fallback to Aired Order if DVD Order returns no results (or maybe to fallback to TMDB or IMDB if the TVDB “DVD Order” returns no results). Pretty much anything would be better than “Episode 1” and “Episode 2”, etc. as titles.

For those that encounter this issue, I figured out that you can change the way a specific series is matched (there are matching settings specifically for the series, vs using the matching settings for the library).

To get there, go to the landing page for the series itself:

Then, click on the pencil icon, and click on the “Advanced” tab:

In there, you can change the “Episode Ordering” selection to fix this issue for that specific series.
