  • If running DSM 6, NEVER place media in the /Plex shared folder.
  • If running DSM 7, NEVER place media in the /PlexMediaServer folder.

Aside from those two locations, you can place it almost anywhere else (do not use the Videos share created by Synology).

How you get the media on the NAS and move it around - file sharing from a PC, File Station, etc - does not matter.

Suggest you peruse the Plex Synology FAQ. It has much useful information, including information on media organization.

You should also review Plex’s media naming & organization requirements. Stay as close to them as possible.

Below is a snippet of how media is organized on my DS918+. It varies slightly from the FAQ, but avoids all restricted locations. I prefer to keep all my media in /media. Also, I keep my sci-fi TV shows in a separate library from my other tv shows.

This is just an example. As long as you avoid the restricted locations you can place media pretty much anywhere you want.
