Plex video playback starts stuttering on NVIDIA Shield Pro but not on Roku - Revisit

Decided to try Kodi and a Plex addon, watched 3 or 4 things on it today and no dropped frames or anything …

Question for you , audio pass through on or off if im connect directly to the TV , no amp

Audio passthrough OFF.

There is nothing gained by trying to send , for example, 7.1 audio to a TV which cannot do anything with it. Most TVs are dumb in this regard. They are built for 2-channel sound. When there is no amp or soundbar, Passthrough is OFF. Let the Shield deal with it.

This is true of any player.

If the player can’t do the conversion internally, PMS will know and do the conversion for you as it converts from DirectPlay → DirectStream (which is very light on the CPU)

I’ve been running with this on… i wonder if that could cause any discrepancy, i’ll update my plex to the latest version and watch something tonight,

Because AVR, I use passthrough on.
Dolby Processing is disabled.
Also my Shield is on 9.2.0, because there are many bugs in 9.1.1, see here.

Didn’t help for me, was watching a show tonight , there was a pretty sizable hitch around the 33 min mark. It was perfect until then but it was essentially a freeze in the video tonight , not just a skip.

I went back to the same moment to make sure it wasn’t in the file itself and no it played fine …

No idea what’s going on.

My Shield (about page)

I have the same version…

Next plan is to turn on networking debugging and use the top command to see the processes of the shield , when the skip happens I’ll see if there’s anything happening in the background to cause it

9.1.1 can’t be stable, to many bugs there.
With 9.1.1. I would have thrown my Shield in the trash long ago.

You still have the frame skip on 9.2.0 though ? ²

???

Are you using it for gaming or runnning the Plex server on the shield itself?

I’m not challenging but don’t understand.
I have 3 of them and none of them have this problem.

They run Plex player app only.
Whether I’m transcoding to it or DirectPlay, there’s never a skip.
Wired or WiFi, the performance is flawless.

I ask about how hard it’s being used because the internal SSD does have a finite life which is shorter than I’d like (not as durable as SSDs in our computers/phones)

I use it as Plex Server & Plex Player, with USB SSD as device memory expansion and as NAS with USB Hub and some USB HDDs.
Actual only 1 from 30 Movies have a problem with async after 30-40min. (This Problem is fixed with Plex Player Software 9.28)

But with 9.1.1. I had problems with jerking after rewinding. The remote control suddenly stopped working. The box started sporadically without doing anything. I was having trouble copying large files from Windows to Shield. And I had sync problems when Dolby active.

After the beta update to 9.2.0, all problems disappeared and the box has been running very stable since then. Films with over 100 Mbit/s run smoothly.

This errors are listet as fixed at Nvidia Site on 9.1.1+Hotfix, too.

How do i install this ? i didnt realise i wasn’t on the latest version… now i’m starting to think have i been using the frw and rr then noticing skipping later on… HMMMMMMMMMMMM

EDIT- Figured it out, gonna give this an install and see

Go here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/522242/shield-experience-upgrade-911-hotfix-image/
Open there the link to: NVIDIA SHIELD TV Software Upgrade 9.1.1+ HotFix Image
Then insert you serial behind the: DONTDELETE-
Dont delete the DONTDELETE-
Then you must wait, sometimes 1 day. The Update comes to you shield.

Thanks for that !
Haha this hotfix is from soooo long ago, yet unreleased, classic nvidia, i can see it has a few issues but nothing serious.

After Hotfix to 9.2.0 nvidia simply stopped everything.
That’s why it will never be official.

Just updated and watched about an hour or a movie , so far so good, more tests needed though to confirm it’s fixed and would still love those stats for nerds

So you should had have this mandatory status for the Shield actually since July 6, 2023. Thanks for following my tip and good luck for the next movies!

I’m now starting to wonder if the frame skipping I was seeing was due to using ffw & RW features and not thinking much of it.

As I said I’ll test further over the next few days and report back

Are you still seeing a frame jump on your tv shows and movies or is it literally just 1 file?

also may i ask are you using an LG tv?
