Plex Web Search Fails To Find Anything

Server: Intel NUC7i5BNK
Server OS: Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
Plex Server Version#: 1.32.4.7195
Plex Web Player Version#: 4.108.0
macOS Browser #1: Firefox 114.0.2 (64-bit)
macOS Browser #2: Safari 16.5.1
Roku Plex app: v7.3.2.8429
iOS Plex app: v8.20

On this latest Plex Server update, I’m getting the spinning wheel forever, on any search using the Plex Web interface. I’ve tried the two browsers above, same issue on both.

Searching via the Plex Roku app, and iOS app work normally. Only the Plex Web interface is having issues. I can see the URL change to the search query, E.g. “http://192.168.0.100:32400/web/index.html#!/search?query=amadeus”, however the spinning wheel never stops, and no search results are produced.

Does the same happen with the hosted web app?

Ok, interesting, search works fine using that hosted web interface. What’s going on here?

If you go to this page https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/web/general
do you see the “friendly name” of your server in the left side bar and a green padlock icon?
Or is it yellow or red?

I do see the friendly name, with a green lock icon.

Do you use a custom domain name for your server?
Or a custom SSL certificate?

No custom domain, or SSL certificate.

If I login (via the top-right drop-down menu, Sign in) then search works.

Is it a requirement now that Plex Web needs to be logged into the user Plex account for search to work? This used to not be the case, search worked fine when not logged in (the server is indeed “claimed” however, in my setup). I also notice that the Plex Web Settings interface is very laggy when NOT logged in (momentary 4-5 sec spinning wheel when navigating). Settings is nice and zippy when logged in. I don’t want to be always logged in. This seems to be the reason that search is working fine on iOS app, and Roku app, as those are indeed logged into my Plex account.

Yes, it’s required. It’s been this way for several months ; possibly a year+ at this point.

Well, something is funky, as I use Plex Web almost daily, and have never had a searching problem, and it’s never logged in.

I just checked with the folks here … We reproduced the problem.

It’s being written up. The devs are already aware.

Thanks for bringing this up. We scratched our heads for a few minutes

FYI - I have had the same issue for over a week.

The PLEX Windows player is working fine, just not the browser from Chrome or Edge

I’ve just updated to the public 1.32.5.7328, and Web Player is still stuck at 4.108.0, so this search problem persists. Any dev status updates?

I am also having the same issue. Is there a work-around for this? Does downgrading to a Web Player less than 4.108.0 to fix until the newer version is released?

Similar issue here, running version 1.29.2.6364 on Synology (version has been unchanged for many months). Browser search stopped working two weeks ago (android mobile, Roku, FireTv apps all search functions work without issue), when entering anything in the search now from a browser it just spins and crashes the session, must reload the page and log back in for navigation to function. If I enable Remote Access the search functions as expected via app.plex.tv (although this is usually left disabled).

Am i banging into the same known issue?

Any thoughts here before the wife finds the problem?

From what I have seen posted since this problem began they are working on it, but the problem is only in Browsers. Actual Apps appear to be working fine

Jumping in here, the search stopped working for me in Firefox and Chrome about a week ago, but still works in Android and Plex.

Having same issue - on Synology, latest version possible on Synology and search working totally fine on Roku and Mobile etc. But not on Web.
I am logged into my Plex account.
For sure Watching this one - would love a fix.

Update -

If you are on Synology - and trying to use quickconnect search does NOT work.
Must have something to do with acccess to your Plex account, not sure.

I tried with http://plex.tv login and search works perfectly.

@rudy-p This should now be working on PMS 1.32.8.7639-fb6452ebf which is currently in Beta via Plex Pass. This is likely due to the bundled web app getting a bump from 4.108.x to 4.116.x.

Please always share the actual version numbers when reporting issues or fixes to issues.

Edit: Adding more context as it is missing from the comments above. This would only happen if

  1. Accessing PMS using the bundled web app (IP:PORT/web)
  2. The user was using the List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth setting
  3. Accessing the PMS from the IP addresses listed within  setting.
