Plex Web would like to sign in to your Plex account This application is at XXX.XX.X... and is not hosted by Plex. Continue only if you recognize this server and wish to grant access

Server Version#: synology ds418
Player Version#: 4.12.3

I’ve installed Plex on my NAS synology and am getting this message when opening up the program: ’ Plex Web

would like to sign in to your Plex account

!

This application is at and is not hosted by Plex. Continue only if you recognize this server and wish to grant access."

I saw other topics about this but it doesn’t seem like there ever was a fix listed…

Thank you for your reply.

Thing is: when I have had Plex set up prior, I was never getting this alert.

Second thing: every time I sign in, it asks me to set up my server. Every time. I set it up the server. Log out. Log back in: “do you want to set up your server”?

Don’t log out. I have never logged out of PlexWeb, which I also host on a Synology NAS. Never had the issue you speak of. When you are done, just close the tab in your browser that PlexWeb was opened in and go about your day.

Unless you are on a public computer there is no reason to sign out. If you are on a family computer that you don’t want children and such to use your account set a pin for your account which will be required to be used (you can set to skip the pin on devices/browsers that you know you are the only one that uses it.

Also make sure browser is not clearing cookies, site data etc every time you close it.

Thanks everyone for the advice. This has solved my issue.

I’m experiencing the same I’ve installed the Plex Server on my Asustor 6404T NAS. Even though I’m logged into the plex.tv site and have plex pass, I can not get the server to be recognized. It has never asked to configure it. I can access the server version but won’t “see” my NAS. Suggestions? I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted the preferences.xml file and re-created it. I till get the message that is described above.

@milescheryl can you try making an SSH tunnel as described in this doc in the section on “on another network” https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288586-installation/#toc-2

What do you DO if the system looses power and you HAVE To start the log in again?

I get the EXACT same thing and keep signing in to the server using the CORRECT credentials.
PLEX is broken before when you could log on locally it worked great.
I am seeing this as a Media Theft by PLEX requiring the server to be hosted and no want to run this sand-boxed from the Internet.

How about if you have to POWER CYCLE?
I just rebuilt my server and before when I was able to log on LOCALLY everything worked but now I see that it ONLY works if PLEX has access to it on the HOSTED network.
Theft of Music and Video maybe?
I take care to NOT open ports that are not absolutely needed for connections.
So what is going on here?

Same here, I use Ubuntu on a virtual server machine and the FIRST run on this gives this error, I finally got into the CONFIGURE for the back end but can not log on to the front end to watch a movie.
Keeps giving the error about the LOCAL IP on a private non sharable network not being hosted by PLEX. I even set the IP to the ORIGINAL IP the server had before the upgrade.
It is an endless loop.
When this was LOCAL and could be logged on with 192.168.1.2:32400 things worked, now you are required to connect to their servers (Security concerns here) to be hosted for a connection.
Something is going on in the back ground that PLEX has not divulged.
Some how I did get in to the back end of MY local server and it is recollecting videos from my 20T NAS storage across the network.
Now I would like to watch some of those movies which I can not do because of what looks like an error.
NOT logging out “once” you finally log in is not a solution that is weak and lazy for a suggestion, logging to Plex.tv is a security concern since my server is LOCAL not online and never shared.
Plex needs to come clean to what they are doing in the back ground, seems criminal with out some explanation and these far reaching requirements.
Maybe a REAL Plex employee can lighten this up.

This won’t work as the password field will not accept the password I have setup.
The same password that I used to create the server so I do know the password and the linked document has no indication of what password to use.
So is it the server the plex.tx the local user???

I can log on just fine without the need for the internet to be up and running. I’m not exactly sure why you are having such issues. Have you set up Plex so that you can access it from your local network without the need for authentication? That might be the first step…

Thank you @FeMaster, I just saw this post thread and was about to share what you just did.

The next thing to configure the type of network connection.

If set to Required then Plex authentication (a connection) is required
Setting to Preferred will fall back if needed.

I need to very carefully qualify here:

  1. If using the bundled app (loaded from the Synology itself) – you can run without authentication.

  2. If you attempt to access it by using app.plex.tv , Authentication will always be required.

I’ve rebooted my Synology NAS numerous times, I’ve installed an update to DSM on my Synology, which also reboots the unit, as well as stopped the Plex Server service and restarted it. It has NEVER asked me to log back in, even after such activities. The most I get out of it is when it asks me to enter my PIN#.

Perhaps follow the advice in the 2 posts prior to this one and things may run a bit smoother for you.

To all following here,

I have messaged the Web team about what is being seen.
I expect they’ll also clearly tell us how it should behave and what those conditions are.

We see a behavior which we can’t explain. We are asking so we know all the conditions in flight .

If there’s a problem, we (everyone involved here) can communicate it directly and get it resolved as quickly as possible.

Being it’s still the weekend for most folks, please grant them time to get into the office on their Monday.
