Plex webOS LG tv 3.72.0 subtitles disappear with "Automatic Play Next Episode" Enabled

Server Version#: 1.13.8.5395
Player Version#:3.72.0 LG tv

I have a problem with the new update for plex on my LG tv running webOS 3.7

Automatic subtitles are not working properly anymore with the new update 3.72.0 for LG tv.
It was working fine before updating.

Issue:
“When you play a TV-show and have “play Automatic next episode” enabled, it only shows subtitles on the first episode, but when the next episode starts there is NO subtitles anymore”

Workaround 1)
Going back to menu and select the episode again, the subtitles work again.

Workaround 2)
Change to always burn-in subtitles in the plex app on the TV seems to fix the problem, but then the server will always transcode.

I have also tryed:
Deleting the app and reinstalling on the tv. (Does not help)
Rolled back serveral server versions on the server but still persists
so this must be related to the LG app and the newest update.

But this is quite annoying, if you like me, just want the subtitles to be always on.

Hope a plex employee will confirm this, and come up with a solution

I can confirm this is a known issue and needs to be fixed on our side and has to do with Direct Playing with soft subtitles and will likely involve a server fix. It is not related to a recent LG update.

Workarounds for now:

  • Stop between episodes and play (playing from the Post-play screen will not avoid this issue)
  • Always burn subtitles (not a great workaround, but valid none-the-less)

I can’t provide an ETA when this might be fixed.

Hey again. Thx for the Quick response.
I must say that i´m a little confused. becaus before the LG 3.72.0 update it WAS showing subtitles every episode when playing the next automatically. Can´t say if the server transcoded them sometimes. but at least it was showing subtitles. I must say this is a drawback if you ask me. But i´m glad that you acknowledge there is a problem. Can you explain more in detail why or how ,it was showing subtitles before the update. it is only the LG tv wich seams to do this. thats why i´m kind a suspekt the LG update as the cause to this behavior. Hope to hear from you again.
Greetings from confused plexpass user

Nothing changed in 3.72.0, since the release of 3.60.1 this issue has been present whenever subtitles have not been transcoded, but before then subtitles have always been transcoded.

I want to report the exact same issue. I couldn’t say when exactly but subtitles used to be displayed automatically when playing a next episode (as expected/configured on the server). And since some update (I think the one that introduced the new UI on the webOS app), it no longer does.

As mentioned by @Noiaboia, this is really annoying when you always use subtitles… Thanks for fixing this :slight_smile:;

According to reply above, this issue looks like fixed, but I’m still experiencing this problem. My app version is 3.74.0 and I tried reinstall but it doesn’t work. What should I do to solve this problem?

No it’s not fixed yet. I mention it being a known issue up to and including 3.72.0 and it hasn’t been fixed since. The workarounds above are the only options for the time being.

This still appears to be an issue is in PMS 1.14.1.5488.
Can we please get an ETA on when this will be resolved?
I know that workaround exist but they’re either incredibly frustrating to do or simply not feasible.

Thanks

Server Version#: Latest, just applied updates
Player Version#:
Plex for LG: 3.80.1
webOS: 3.8.0

This has been happening for months now… When streaming on my LG TV, subtitles only work for the first episode or movie I watch. After that, when another movie or show auto plays, there are no subtitles. However, if I go to the settings for currently playing video and select subtitles, there is a subtitle track and it’s selected but does not work. If I then select the subtitle track and press enter on my remote, the subtitles kick in. So basically:

  • Play TV show, subtitles work
  • Episode ends
  • Next episode plays, no subtitles
  • Pause the episode, go to settings -> Subtitles.
  • The subtitle track is selected even though it isn’t showing
  • Select the sub title track, hit enter, play episode
  • Subtitles work

This does not happen on my PC, Android phone or tablet.

I do not have an ETA to share on when this issue will be resolve, nor do we typically provide one. We’ll try to provide an update once a release is available and try to make sure the change logs for that release call out the fix.

Still no ETA? This is still happening on all devices. So many good changes with new app design ect. And automatic download subtitles. But still if you play next episode automatically the subtitles won’t work. Unless you go back out of the TV show and play again or you go change subtitle to the same one highlighted. It’s so god damn annoying. Plz Plex I am a lifetime subscriber and still there is no subtitles on my TV show if they play next one automatically. It has been many years now. Keeps adding new stuff instead of taking care of the core mechanics.

+1, this is extremely annoying!

I believe I mentioned this on a related thread previously, but this turned out to be a server issue and we’re waiting on the server team to address it.

Any update on this? It’s been an issue for a long time now…

Any update on this?? This bug has been reported for a while and is still not fixed.

And actually, subtitles have been even worse lately (for a coupe weeks I would say): when I’m watching an episode, I’m loosing each time subtitles for the last few minutes.

And of course, everything is just fine when watching through Chromecast or Web App.

I’m backing this issue. Happens also on samsung TV. Subtitles are gone last few minutes. You need to stop and play again in order to have it back. And indeed, ‘autoplay next episode’ does not bring any subtitles.

This has never worked!I had the always burn setting until late August and it worked fine.Since then ,after the updates they made transcoding is impossible with subs enabled ,cause the video stutters and keeps buffering. They simply don’t care to fix it.It’s a well known issue for quite some time.I also use Lg.
