We’re now 3 months later, seach is still broken and no fix insight.
Minor update, Home/End keys will now keep the cursor inside the search bar and navigates to home/end of the text in the search bar. This is now available on Web and Desktop releases.
Any chance of getting the Search Results page back? Or will that simply not work with the current drop-down results?
Please someone help… how do I change the search back to the way it was before? It is simply a bad design and not usable.
It’s client-side, so my recommended solution for now is to download Plex Media Player (the old version for HTPCs from 2020) and deactivate the TV mode. It has the old search, it still displays the numbers on the posters indicating how many versions exist of each movie, and it has none of the new online anti-features.

Agree this is the best “solution”.
Not holding my breath that the web based PLEX app will ever have a functional search again. (In Fact there is a brand new issue - can no longer navigate to the additional info from the search results. The three dots to view More Information about the file are no longer clickable.)
Developers Please stop “Upgrading” a working product. You will alienate your user base. Quick
Here is the link for the Plex Media Player for Windows: https://downloads.plex.tv/plexmediaplayer/2.58.0.1076-38e019da/PlexMediaPlayer-2.58.0.1076-38e019da-windows-x64.exe
The broken context menu from a search result issue has been filed and raised. Thanks for reported the issue! It’s kind of an odd one as some results are working as expected but some are not. There seems to be some caching issue going on as once you’re landed on the results detail page, that result’s context menu begins working again.
@mrphilbrick What version is your PMS?
Good to know - thanks. I had reported it earlier as well and will ask for that post to be closed.
A drop-down is the WRONG kind of GUI control. A separate result page is absolutely required. The current whiz-bang all-in-one drop-down is completely unacceptable. And it requires an option to exclude everything except MY collection. It aggravates me every time I need to use it.
This, plus on-going unfixed bugs while adding every bell 'n whistle trendy fools think of is no way to manage a product line. After years of using Plex I find myself seriously considering other media systems.
Is Plex going to shove this broken search down our throats? Tell us NOW if there is any discussion whatsoever to back away from this stupid drop-down approach. That answer will help me decide whether to remove Plex and switch to a competitor.
I do believe that the context menu not appearing when clicking the 3 dots is a caching issue.
If I am in my Movies library, click on a random letter, “W” for example, and it will take me to the start of the W’s … then, while on that same screen, if I do a search for “Wa”, the top search results will be movies that are already showing in the Movie library that I am currently in … in those search results, I can then click the 3 dots and access the context menu without issue only for those movies that are already on my screen.
But if I search for a movie that is deeper in the W’s… e.g., searching for “Wo” will bring up movies in the search results that are not on my screen and the context menu will fail to load for those items.
So from what I am seeing, only items the client has interacted with in some manner will the context menu work.
I think Version 1.25.5.5492
So any ETA on making the new search function remotely useful? It’s now been rolled out to web server, and I still have the same modal that doesn’t even show result titles when there is more than one version of a movie in a library. I’m sorry, but this is absurd. You have nuked all functionality from the search function and I’m forced to use manual workarounds. If Plex isn’t even attempting to actually bring the results page back, I will be looking into alternative services. This is unusable without manual workarounds, and that’s honestly absurd from a company like this.
No way am I downloading an app! Streaming should be browser based. Apps incur additional data collection, and tracking risks, and they bloat out your system. The problem is NOT client side. The programming in Plex is what is causing the search to be horrid in web browsers. Plex made a decision to replace the search and do away with the results page. I am extremely disappointed that this was intentional. I am now extremely worried about future updates and “improvements.”
Thank you very much. You wouldn’t happen to know where to find a copy. I deleted all old versions some while ago :’-(
Looking for the DSM7 SPK version; Google is coming up short and there’s of course only a link to download the latest version on plex.tv…
– edit –
Never mind, found a link to a debian version an reconstructed the URL from there.

@Atomatth Not trying to be pushy here, but I’m curious why the results page hasn’t been reintegrated into the search function already. It’s clearly a massive inconvenience for your user base, and the results page literally still exists (you can manually go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/search?query= and type your search query at the end of the URL to get to the classic results page). It really should not be difficult to add the ability to get to the results page back into the search functionality. I cannot comprehend why there would be “no ETA” for a basic QOL fix like this.
Sadly, the search result itself is still broken. We’ve reported that 100 times in this thread alone, when will that be fixed?
Is there a specific issue you’re seeing that wasn’t already mentioned in this thread?
No, just repeating that the new search is useless in web and given over 3 months later no one bothered to include a simple link to a page that is still present, a reminder is clearly required.
Still broken in server version 1.26.1.5798 with Web version 4.80.0.
Still broken with Plex Web 4.81.1.
