Plex Web's new search - some feedback and issues

Yep, in fact it seems even worse, I had some results where it seemed to work.
just forced a refresh of the web app and now none of mine work.

I have multiple servers running different versions of PMS and it make no difference which one I select to search, the context menu does not work at all. So it does not seem to be related to the version of PMS.

Thanks @blim5001 for reporting that. @boblinthewild Yeah, this is unfortunate. The bundled web (current public and beta version) player has working context buttons but lacks the Where to Watch toggle. So either option may not be ideal depending on use. Thanks again for bumping!

tbh, sadly this whole new search is a bit unfortunate.

I have pretty much stopped using the hosted the web app due to the new search and just check it occasionally.

I have zero interest in the “Discover” and “Where to watch” stuff, so I generally just use the bundled web app on one of the older versions of PMS I have.

@Atomatth, still getting the same utterly unhelpful modal when there are multiple versions of the same movie in my library. Any update on any kind of ETA for either bringing back the results page or actually fixing the modal?

The return of the results page is getting closer but still no ETA. As for the specific “Editions” issue you’ve highlighted this will require additional work from PMS along with Web. Hopefully both the results page and the Edition work can be released at the same time but chances are they might not. Sorry, I’m not able to provide an ETA. I can really only state that both areas are being actively worked on.

It seems they have no plans to make a usable search, lip service. The current drop-down is utterly UNACCEPTABLE. I’m dropping Plex after 7 years because it’s not about the users anymore but about how many outside companies they can please with features no one cares about. It’s about m.o.n.e.y. and not about even fixing the most basic BUGS that have been there for years. It’s only gotten worse. … I’m done.

Did you read the previous post from @Atomatth? It’s pretty clear they are working on it.

I wish folks would stop assuming “no one” cares about certain features just because you don’t. You are not everyone.

Whatever. Yes I read it. And have been using this and watched the development pattern for years. Also am a 46-year software engineer and have written Open Source projects that support Plex. I stand by my statement.

When is this going to be fixed? I tag all my photos in Plex manually and I would like to be able to use theses photo tags again (searching for photo tags).

When searching with All Media Types search filter, you are correct, photo’s tags are not showing results. For now the solution is to use the Photos search filter. I’ll raise this issue again.

Please provide an update.

I have nothing new to share. Work is still progressing, no ETA. Sorry.

Hi Atomatth

Thanks for your feedback. I just tested your input (set search scope to photos) and it worked in the web interface (Version 1.27.1.5916). That wasn’t the case a few weeks ago so it looks like some progress regarding this problem. However, in the Android App the problem still persists (Version 9.4.0.33297).

Even though you can access the results page this way it still lacks because of the new search. If you notice this page only contains the words as a prefix and not just a word containing a word like I explained in another thread about the new search. I could only remember ‘burn’ was in the title of the movie I was looking for. Using the new search I could not find it at all. I searched on IMDB.com and found that title number 17 was Brightburn (2019). The search just manages to be the worst on the planet because somehow software engineers forgot to remember how to do basic bubble searches.

Couple updates to search in Web. Please see the release notes for Web.

Mostly wanted to highlight this change:

  • Search: Fixed an issue that could cause unexpected behavior when pressing return while search results are being fetched

What part of “remove the drop-down approach” don’t the powers that be get?

The drop-down is 1) slow, 2) unstable and buggy as hell, 3) difficult to edit, 4) includes crap people do not want to see, 5) has no sensible organization, 6) lacks options to control what is displayed, 7) is being forced down our throats when most people want a PAGE. A page/tab gives me the option of going down through results to find what I what without trying to keep track of what that P.O.S. drop-down is doing.

The approach is completely unacceptable. Stop messing with it and make a damn page.

Frankly Plex is losing it’s way. Feature creep while long-term bugs have not been fixed indicates bad management and a failing organization.

This did not address the issue… getting tired of waiting

How do we disable autosuggest?

If I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist (a really common workflow when I’m adding new media to avoid duplication) and press enter it opens up something I do NOT want every single dang time.

It’s unhelpful and annoying, I never want to use this feature.
