Plex Web's new search - some feedback and issues

@Atomatth , I appreciate your comments, but can you please comment on the issue I discussed about about how items are grouped? Should I post some images, or do you understand the issue?

@AllanMarcus There is no way to turn off the grouping of results.

@Atomatth Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I just did a search for “The Princess”, and I expected Plex to show me both movies I have with that exact name (The Princess (2022) - IMDb and The Princess (2022) - IMDb). Since they’re both from the same year, I named the folders as follows, just so that they could co-exist:

The Princess (2022) {imdb-tt13393128}

The Princess (2022) {imdb-tt13406136}

The rest of my movie folders don’t use the IMDB ID, and I use .nfo files with the URL inside. Detection of both movies was flawless, but a search shows

instead of showing each movie separately. A bug, I would think.

@VBB I would agree. Thanks for reporting.

Is making this an option/function in the works?

I started toying with Edition support today. Overall it seems to address a lot of my issues. That said, when I search for a movie that I’ve set up with editions via the new file naming system, they are still all grouped together with the same useless modal.

At the very least, is there some way to get more info than just server name and library name? Film title or edition title? Anything? As of right now, search is literally pointless. If I want to actually pick a specific version of the movie, I either have to click into the result to see the “Other Editions” list (which isn’t working right now, btw), or I just have to go to my library, sort alphabetical, and scroll down to it. Neither is very usable. I’m sure others using my server are having an incredibly difficult time seeing the version they want to watch. The search results don’t even pick the original edition. It’s just a random edition - usually not the original. I’ve already been asked why I “only” have “some weird fan edit” of Blade Runner. This is honestly making Plex less and less usable. It’s a much bigger issue than your team seems to realize.

We are aware that Edition support is needed in other areas, especially Search.

Not at this time, no.

@Atomatth - not sure if this is your area, but since it’s related to the search function in general:

Just now, on the Shield with the latest beta, when I select “Search”, I now get presented with a row of “Popular searches on Plex”. I have all discover features disabled, and search is limited to my own server. Should that row be there, and if so, will there be an option to disable it?

@VBB this is connected to Discover and the More Ways to Watch search results so disabling either one in your Account Settings > Online Media Source - Discover section will remove the “Popular Search on Plex” hub. You can also use the Search settings to toggle the More Ways to Watch search results setting to remove this hub while keeping Discover enabled.

That’s what I thought, and it’s why I said I already have everything disabled that can be disabled. Yet, “Popular searches on Plex” still shows when I perform a search on the Shield. It does not show in Web’s search. Was just wondering if that’s a current bug (in Android).

Ugh. Don’t know how I missed you mentioning that. I’m seeing it now on my Shield. Thanks for the follow up. I’ll file this.

Not meaning to pile on, but I’m also seeing this under my kids’ managed accounts and the suggestions are completely inappropriate, so please prioritize this issue.

@jonnyatlas Please check out the latest Web release. Specifically:

  • Display edition data in more places

Any update on this? Very frustrating that a cross media search still does not include Photos. Surely this is a bug that should have been addressed by now, over 7 months after it was introduced. Worked perfectly well prior to the new search being launched.

@andyev26 Nothing yet… Yeah something is up, we’ll get it. Sorry it’s taking so long but thank you for your patience.

@VBB @BlueJ007 Looks like the fix should be coming soon, though I do not know what Android release it will be. Seeing as how we just had a release earlier today, it may be a week or so but I really do not know for sure.

Perfectly true! Unfortunately, the Plex rulers prioritize the tasks completely wrong to my mind.

@andyev26 @rauchi @captain_caveman2k Please see the latest Web release notes.

  • Search: Fixed an issue that caused Photo Tags results to not appear in search results page

I know that this isn’t exactly the issue you’re dealing with but I did want to highlight the improvements in Photo searching. Also, the fix for Photo results is making it’s way through now. Expect the Photo results issue to resolved in the near future if not in the next release.

Thank you. It makes no difference to the issue I reported but good to hear that a fix may be available soon.

Do you have any further insight into where I should be seeing the change? I haven’t noticed any additional places where edition data shows up. Not sure if I’m just not looking in the right place? Currently on v 1.29.0.6244

1.29.0.6244 would be the PMS version not the Web version (hosted or bundled). You’ll need to be using http://app.plex.tv (hosted) to see these changes. The bundled web app that ships with PMS is usually several versions behind.

Noted that the issue with photos not appearing in the top search results has been fixed in the 4.93.2 web release. Thank you.
