Plex & Windows 10 Problems

To the point: I run simple home network, windows 10, windows XP, Roku’s, Android, iPad…
My network is setup fine, devices are fine… I have noticed a steady degradation in Plex Server functions as updates progressed… to point I have de-graded to v3.83.1 to make it even usable again… Plex server is running on Windows 10 with plenty of resources. I don’t have time nor care to spend hours/days fixing what ‘used’ to work fine… Maybe the problem is on the server… but it sure as hell was of no fault of mine… Ideas? Fixes? Plex Support?

Not sure what that is a reference to…

Could you describe your problem?

I have de-graded back to version 3.83.1… <<< web client ver… sorry… Version 1.15.2.793

Without ANY changes to Plex or the server… other than upgrades (updates) Plex has progressively slowed down loading selections if they load at all… get play back stopped due to multi errors try again… series programs fail to play next episode with above error… xp machines will not play video at all anymore… used to work fine… seems like so many other ‘good’ programs/apps plex is bloating up a great platform to point it barely runs… Glad I didn’t go premium…

The current PMS Version is 1.18.6.2368

I was running current version… barely works if at all, started having problems about 4-5-6 versions ago, progressively got worse with each update, so I went back to v3.83.1…
Version 1.15.2.793

My bad v3.83.1 is version of web client…
PMS Version 1.15.2.793

Depends on a lot of factors. You need to isolate & relay more specifics. If it’s all devices then it’s not a Plex issue & it will be a hardware or network issue. If you have isolated to certain devices, then you need to ensure they’re capable of playing content & running the applications properly. Wouldn’t hurt to find out if you have a firewall policy that could interfere either.

With the info you provided, all answers will be speculation & a shot in the dark until you troubleshoot & provide more adequate information. You have not indicated what you have done nor how you just ruled out the network & hardware, as well have provided no information on what device(s) you experience web client issues on. No one can just pull a rabbit out a fix your generic issue of “it’s not working, fix it” demand.

Edit: XP is a dead platform & is not supported anymore. So, you will run into compatibility issues in the future since Plex will advance w/ modern versions of Windows & other OSs.

I am aware of all you say… my network works very well, and I can play all content via media players on several devices at same time no problems, just like plex >>>(used to as well).<<<
Understand XP is been dead, I been networking since before 1993 so have a lil experience.
Don’t expect support for xp device, just think the devices I used for years to watch movies etc should still be able to function as they will NOT using plex… it’s all just media files… plex just makes it all purdy n organized…
Playback issues are random if playback even started… much better using older version…
Just thought maybe others experienced anything similar… before I dig deeper…
I think PMS is great… but as I mentioned, it has went down hill in performance as it has upgraded.

as expected people don’t read too well… server is on windows 10

He was referring to the PMS version

Yes I went back to that version from current version as I mentioned… and the seriously out of date version works fine… thought I explained that pretty clearly

really… thank you Mr. Obvious… lol I went back to see if it would work, it does, I came here for maybe some insight not to get dumed down… I have stated my network, server etc all work fine… and dropping back to out of date version took care of issues… not concerned with xp devices… I can fix that when I get time…

All we can say right now is make sure your Win10 machine is fully up-to-date on Windows updates & drivers for all equipment used.

You’re not giving us a whole lot to go off of, so the quality of our answers is only going to reflect what you have given us.
Currently, I have my rigs all updated to latest versions on Windows 10 Pro using a dedicated PMS server while streaming, using the Plex desktop app, on other machines & have no issues. I have not seen any issues w/ the recent update to PMS just yet, so I would suggest confirming you have updated everything & lose the attitude, then get back to us.

While you’re at it, where is all of your metadata saved? Same HDD as your content? On a separate SSD? Do you DRAM cache? You need to elaborate what your setup is like, more exactly of what your issue is, & what is happening on that same Win10 device while you’re trying to use PMS/webclient or whatever. You have all the info & we have to start from nothing except what you give us. Can’t mind read.

Absolutely…! I do… and they are… I use Windows 10 Pro as well… dedicated machine for PMS…
No attitude, I have read quite a few forums over the years… everyone jumps to conclusion everyone below them knows little, I am just saying that… all was well few updates back… then it started having issues… I waited a few updates (hoping there might have been a bug fix) then last update seemed to make it worse no doubt… so I just went back roughly to when I rem it working… I think I mention the issues early on…
All my metadata is right where it has been and worked flawlessly in the past, still does except
using latest PMS… i.e. hardware is all fine…
I guess I can update a version at a time to see where issues start again…? just sounds like a hassle n thought others may have had similar issues… so far Version 1.15.2.793 is working fine…
Only use it on my home media…

Follow Up:
With the extra home time lately, figured I’d get back with my findings.

Windows 10 Pro Server: “My Plex Server”
Machine Works great as it always has (microsoft updates excluded) lol
Plex v1.18.0.1913 & newer break FireFox (settings won’t save, always starts at finish setup screen)
(prior plex versions seem to work fine. crazy fast loading content now)
I am running older plex version currently.
So it seems to be an issue with plex…

All other devices ‘clients’ Roku, Android, IOS, work great again… (with older plex ver on server)
Plex even works on my XP machines again. (separate issue)

Those of you all concerned about using XP… none of them have internet access. (no point)
I’ve used them for years (long before finding plex) to play my home media.
They have great screens, fast and make great movie, video, music players around the house.

I love Plex & only reason I’ve not done a life time sub. is because it started having issues.
My primary use of Plex is for my home media collection & I have never tried the Plex online content

So it seems something has changed in Plex… ?
If plex changed and there is some issue between plex & browsers,
I would think plex make it clear & users would be notified.

Any input would be great.
I’d much prefer to run the latest n greatest Plex version but not if it slows down, breaks my working setup.

Having a similar experience. Had PMS on a server running Windows 7 for years, problem free, just worked with very little maintainence. Upgraded to Windows 10 after the support dropped for 7, this was about 6 months ago, ever since, the perfomance of PMS has progressively deteriorated.

Random crashes, problems with remote access, much more log activity, slow, PMS as a service doesnt seem has happy with 10 as it was with 7? The PMS database is smaller than it was when running on Windows 7 due to the purging of many GB of unused media data.

Not going to bother trying to solve it, anticipating it will end up being an endless task. Will try Linux on the server instead.

I’m running a number of PMS servers on Windows 7…
All work great, and i seem to have few problems with it.
I will keep using Windows 7 until PMS just won’t work…

PMS is the only thing these system are used for, so security issues are limited…
I sill get updates for them, mainly security and defender.

Also I don’t see the issues others report with remote, sleep and other issues…
Also I only update PMS with the public version and after seeing what comments are in the forums…

Ya, don’t expect much help here, I think I pretty well explained my issue from start and they just wanted details on devices etc. after I already said devices & network were fine. I understand ‘most’ are not real tech savvy but I been working with computers & networks a long time. They act like it just can not be anything wrong with Plex… lmao… and want to run people thru hours if not days of trouble shooting. Well there are issues with the newer versions, I am currently running Version 1.16.6.1592 with no issues at all… Plex v1.18.0.1913 & newer have issues… so I suggest going back to older version. You can uninstall current & install older without losing any of your data. Personally I think they are bloating up Plex with the online stuff & forgetting about the local usage…

Agree, most of the time, when you end up posting here its the last resort. Everything has already been tried and tried again to make sure.

Thanks for the advice, I will try that older version for a few weeks and see if it improves the performance. Will probably do a Linux install in VM at the same time and run a test PMS to see if it is more stable long term.
