Plex windows app has no video only sound

Player Version#: 1.110.0.351

I much prefer to use the desktop app for Windows but it hasn’t worked properly for a long time. I just re-downloaded it and it’s still doing the same thing. Whenever I play a video I get the audio but no video, just a black screen. It happens with every file I try.

Microsoft decided to not include several audio codecs with the Windows 11 update.

This is the main one, you may need to look for others.

LOL, I need to read better, you have audio but no video.

How many video devices are in your machine?

First would be to DDU and remove all graphics drivers and then update with latest. Alternatively you can try resetting all graphics settings to default.

You can try setting up custom settings for your graphics card for the Plex app.

In Windows: System>Display>Graphics “Custom settings for applications”
Add Desktop App, I have:
C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex as the location, then change the GPU preference to your highest performing device.

Try this:

  1. close the player app
  2. empty out its data folder C:\Users\[Windows_user_name]\AppData\Local\Plex
  3. restart the player
  4. go to Settings - ‘Show Advanced’ - Plex for Windows - Player - “Video Playback Quality” and dial this down to the lowest. Then raise again one-step-after-another, after playing a variety of videos with differing video codecs and resolutions.
  5. Do also toggle “Use Hardware Decoding” to see if you encounter a difference

It’s all good but it doesn’t matter much anymore, I can’t get Plex to work at all anymore. The browser based version won’t play anything and half the time it won’t even connect to my server. The desktop app just doesn’t even work anymore, every time I start it, it just gets stuck on the logo screen and times out.

I’ve uninstalled the server, retried the app multiple times. I’m not sure what happened over the course of the past couple of days because up until then it’s worked flawlessly.

For now I’m jumping ship. I’m going to uninstall everything and cancel my subscription.

Thanks for you help.
