I couldn’t reclaim my server after the password breach. I figured I’d start fresh since my library was fairly small. I’m unable to do that. When I try to add media, I see a message reading “get plex Media server.” I already have it and it’s running. Anyone run into this?
There is no need to start over.

Thanks but this didn’t work. No solutions have worked. I just want to start over but can’t do that. Plex is no help either. I truly regret paying for a lifetime pass.
Some additional info. My server was 99% music. I had just started dabbling with video content. It seemed easier to just create a new server. I don’t care if I can’t reclaim my old one. The issue now is why won’t Plex recognize that Plex media server is installed and running?
Same issue too.
I saw a few older posts from people with the same problem. None had any solutions. It’s absolutely ridiculous that Plex will take people‘s money for a lifetime pass but refuses to offer any kind of tech support. I’ve requested a refund (which I doubt I’ll get) and they keep sending me here.
Was Plex Media server already installed on this machine?
What did you do so far to start over?
I’m running Plex Media Server. I started over my removing my old server since I couldn’t reclaim it. Now, the Plex app doesn’t recognize the media server, giving me a message to install it. I’m not alone in this. I searched the forums and it’s a repeated issue that as far as I can see, hasn’t been solved. There are several people on Reddit reporting the same exact thing.
You only repeated your initial post from above.please try and answer my actual questions in my last post.
Plex media server was and currently is installed on the machine. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled everything plex related multiple times. When I log in, it correctly shows there are no servers. So far, the only thing I’ve done is try to add media. This takes me to a page that asks me to install plex media server. I can’t do anything else beyond that. The Plex app simply will not recognize that plex media server is running.
On your Plex Media Server host (the Windows system where you installed it), find the Plex icon in the notification area (aka, the System Tray, you may need to click the ^ to see it). Right click the Plex icon and select “Open Plex.” This will take you to the Plex login screen. When you do, it should log you in and claim your server.
You should then be able to see server again from other apps, including app.plex.tv (once you log them back in).
Thank you! That worked.
You’re welcome, thanks for confirming. I honestly don’t know why Plex mods are leading with the registry modification method. It makes no sense. The method I suggested above is actually the first thing they list in their own “new claiming requirements for Windows” post.
It’s kind of baffling.
I appreciate them trying to help. And maybe I wasn’t clear enough about the problem from the start. But yeah, your suggestion was so simple that it’s best to start there.
Yeah, I was probably a bit harsh
. They are being inundated right now.
The bigger issue is with Plex itself. Why didn’t they provide instructions on how to safely change your password? And since this debacle started, it’s been radio silence. And why don’t they have actual tech support instead of relying on forum mods and customers? They’ll gladly take your money but you’re kind of on your own after that.
I’m sure there was trade-off between expediency and completeness. They likely wanted to ensure that as many accounts as possible were protected by changing passwords. It’s clear they didn’t fully consider the implications of their instructions (i.e., signing out all devices means servers as well).
I’m no apologist. They should have done a must better job of communicating that. They’ve done a great job of annoying their users of late through lack of considering the implications of their actions. It’s very annoying for some of us who try to help out where we can.
