Plexamp Caching on Android not working?

Running Plexamp on a Pixel 8. (Last Updated March 20, 2024)

Caching over cellular seems not to be working at all for me right now. I have 40 tracks caching set on cellular and 16GB of cache set - only 2GB is being used by the app for some downloaded playlists.

When I start a new playlist over cellular, I should expect cellular data usage to climb quite fast. I can get 100+mbps over cellular and upload from where the server is is about 15Mbpps. However, it jumps by a couple of MB towards the end of each track and stays there until the next track is nearly finished - what I would expect if I had “cache next track only” set or even no caching at all.

It’s a bit harder to tell with wifi because the counters are already so high they have less resolution, but caching seems also not to work with wifi either.

If I am playing from a server on my home wifi, but have wifi switched off on the phone, and then play a playlist for a while, then switch on the wifi, it stream opus (transcoded) for the remainder of the current track and the following track, then starts playing the native encoding (not transcoded).

If I then play a few tracks on wifi and then switch the wifi off, the current and next track play on source encoding and then it switches back to Opus.

Turn off both and the playback stops after the next-to-current track.

There’s no server-side switch to enable caching right?

Never noticed the problem until today because I seem to have been on the network whenever I used Plexamp for some time. Took a drive through a no-signa area today and everything went pear-shaped.

Let us know what your caching settings are for cellular.

Send us Plexamp logs after things go pear-shaped.

Cache setting is 40 tracks for both wifi and cellular.

I’ve attached a log that exhibits the behaviour I described above.

The interesting part starts at 08:38:22 where I switched to a different source (miw-nas-3, 192.168.3.13) and started a shuffle on a playlist.

I let it play for a few tracks on wifi and at
08:54:06 I turned off wifi and it switched to cellular
09:01 it finished the track after the one I was playing when I switched off Wifi - next track was transcoded so not sourced from cache.
09:17:47 I switched off cellular data, and it went offline
09:24 it finished the track after the one where I switched off Cellular, and things went pear-shaped (i.e. it could not play the tracks at all.)

It seems as if the tracks were all cached, but that the app would not use the cahe it had?

Hmm, a few issues here:

It seems to have issues connecting remotely back to your server over cellular, at least in some cases

In other cases there are other failures:

Seems like this is why it’s having trouble pre-caching.

There is something odd in your logs… let me know an email if you’ve be willing to run a beta and share logs.

OK. These things might have something to do with two competing Plex Servers on the same LAN. I brought a NAS from another site for syncing of other files. I’ll be taking it back this weekend and I’ll rerun the tests for the elimination of pathology.

If it still makes sense I am happy to run a test version of plexamp on that device.

For clarity, not being able to reach 192.168.1.83 and 172.104.62.188 over cellular is expected, but 120.153.90.119 should be reachable (but maybe it went to the wrong port or the wrong server or that was the other server which could have been temporarly nonresponsive because it had a heck of a lot to do at the time.)

OK. with a single plex server on the LAN, I tried again.

14:19:11 Started a shuffle
14:34:50 Turned off Wifi
14:40 starting track after next track from where I switched off Wifi - transcoding started
14:52:00 Switched off cellular
14:56 - playback stalled at start of next track+1

LAN Address of server is 192.168.3.12
WAN address of LAN is 120.153.202.169

I’ve made a log file with a cleaner installation that will hopefully remove some of the chaff…
