Plexamp cannot cast to Google devices

I’m not sure when this stopped happening but it was within the past couple of days. I cannot cast to any of my Google devices: Chromecast audio, nest speaker, or nest hub. I’m able to connect with other apps, like YouTube music or my audiobook player. When I connect it will make the sound from the speaker that it’s connected but the icon on plexamp keeps spinning and eventually says it cannot connect. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I see failures to connect, which is generally a networking thing. You can try enabling the advanced > remote > use remote connection to see if it’s some double NAT thing on your network.

I tried that and I didn’t work, but it magically started working again today :person_shrugging:

Thanks for looking anyway!

Google shakes fist

I have this exact same issue as described after updating to the latest plexamp version.

I can still cast from the Plex app on the same android device but not from plexamp.

Both are the latest versions.

Just to clarify, when did you update? We haven’t released a new version in a few weeks.

I updated a couple of days ago. It was working fine on Monday but I noticed yesterday it wasn’t.

I tried the advanced option you mentioned but no change. Also spotted theres another thread with the same issue.

Checking my phone it says I updated plexamp on the 2nd October.

So it can’t be plexamp that’s the issue as it was 100% working the weekend and Monday.

The Plex app casts fine currently. Does it use a different mechanism to do so?

We’re as confused as you are at the moment; we’re investigating.

Yes I tried this. Still not working

Mine stopped working on plex and plexamp apps on my android, and plexamp app on my ipad. Only could cast from plex app on ipad. Today, though, it seems like it’s back to normal. Weird!

Android stopped working for me about a week ago. iOS working fine.

Same issue. Started this week. I can cast to the same devices from Plex or by mirroring but not through the Plexamp app. Original Chromecast and 2 Home Minis. I forgot the wifi network on the home minis and reconnected. Also turned on the remote setting in Plexamp.

No, the Plexamp implementation is more modern, which adds to the confusion about why it is not working in Plexamp when the Plex app does work. We’ve been testing internally and have yet to find a pattern for the cause.

I have a Chromecast Audio which is working fine, others with older and new devices (Google Home) also have no problems. It’s not working at all for a few.

Those in this thread for whom it has resumed working (@dickorydoo) is it still OK? Can you think of anything that changed at your end?

Mine started working again yesterday. No change my end at all.
It’s working ok today still.

I checked the cast firmware version on my devices and they are on various versions.

Non of my devices were working from plexamp but we’re working from the Plex app on the same trigger android device. Also casting was working fine from Home Assistant from a RPI.

I’ve got a mix of cast devices:
Chromecast audio
Nest hubs v1 and V2
Lenovo clocks, essential and V1.
Nest speaker.

I think what makes the chromecast experience more inconsistent, inconvenient, and a bit jarring is the fact that some users aren’t all using the same versions of chromecast.

For instance, I have a Onkyo amplifier with its own implementation of chromecast and the firmware gets updated every couple of quarters per year. Third party devices that are manufactured but also come installed with a older version of chromecast installed may cause a inconsistent experience.

I also own several Insignia (Best Buy brand) chromecast speakers that I also have to wait for updates from insignia. They haven’t stopped sending out firmware updates yet but I’m waiting for the EOL of that soon.

I do think that because Google has more of a lead and it’s their protocol, that they have a better handle of updates with their chromecasting issues, but I am doubtful that third party manufacturers are or would be willing to continue sending out updates to five year old, discontinued products that have chromecasting apart of the media experience. Those versions of chromecast are often behind the official fixed releases that get sent out to googles own devices.

This is something not found in owning and experiencing with AirPlay on iOS devices.

These are the devices I have and their current firmware versions. Unfortunately I don’t have those from when it wasn’t working. But it wasn’t working on any device from Plexamp. Just tested and it works on all devices again.

I can’t imagine the Lenovo devices are getting new cast firmware at the same time as the Google devices.

Mine started working the next day, I didn’t change anything as far as I know. It has been working fine since then the few times I have tried to use it. I tried rebooting the chromecast devices, my phone, and the plex server, in addition to trying the “use remote connection” option the day before but it made no difference.

Wow, thanks for writing down all the version numbers, much appreciated! So weird that it randomly started working…
