PlexAmp playback crashing Plex server

Download the PMS from my NAS? Is there a specific folder(s) that you want from the PMS/App Data/PMS?

Or is there some other DB you’re seeking? How do I DM to you? I can just get the DB you desire and send you a Dropbox link to it.

From app.plex.tv go to Settings > Server Settings > Troublshooting

You should be able to select my user avatar in this post and then select Message.

That would work.

I replied to the DM we exchanged seeing if you had any success from the logs I sent you. I’m sure you got but thought I’d post here. Sorry for the duplicate messages.

Atomatth, it does not look like the latest PMS beta that was released today has a fix for this Plexamp issue. Can you confirm that a fix is still being worked on and hasn’t made it into the Beta yet?

The issue is still open internally.

With it being open still internally, and knowing it’s hard to gauge I’m sure, based on your experience, do you know how much longer this will take to resolve?

Unfortunately I do not know.

Hopefully it will be soon. I’m thinking positive thoughts.

Just want to give an update here. I think it has been 3 or 4 weeks since my last crash, which was happening almost weekly for a while.

While it could be that one of the last beta updates fixed the issue, what I suspect helped was setting Plexamp to stream at 128kpbs. Previously it was set at the highest bitrate, I think. At least a few times, I noticed in the logs that PMS seemed to be going in a bit of a loop trying to decide what level to transcode a song to. I suspect that being outside and bouncing around between cell towers may have contributed to this, which is why it never crashes streaming on my LAN. In any event, if you are still getting crashes with PMS when using Plexamp outside your network, give that a try.

Are you playing music from a NAS or desktop computer? Were you listening to a streaming service such as Spotify or iHeart Radio when this happened?

I think the loop behavior has been brought up before but it is good to get any, and all feedback we can to help solve this behavior. I would hope streaming at 128kpbs won’t be necessary as it defeats the purpose of all the work that goes into having a personal library. And since playback can be very good for an hour long walk for example, we know that it has to be something isolated that pops up.

I had a crash while walking earlier this week but forgot to download the logs. I could not get it to come back up. When my crash happens, it stops Plex on my Synology NAS, forcing me to log in with Quick Connect to get it started again. That usually helps, but not always as I’ve shared on this exchange several times.

I have a windows PC running PMS (it is pointing to a Synology NAS, but PMS is not running on it). I was streaming music from my system, not Spotify or similar services. I am training for a marathon and am using Plexamp at least 8 hours a week outside of my LAN.

The only other setting I have changed on PMS in the last few weeks was the time for tasks to start/end. I wanted to make sure any analyzing of new TV/movies was also not interfering with Plexamp. But I suspect the 128k setting is what has improved the crashing.

I’m a tad confused. You have Windows PC running PMS, pointing to a Synology NAS but PMS isn’t running on it. I’m sure Atomatth can clarify for me.

I’m not sure it even makes a difference but since I don’t use Windows to play PlexAmp music, all I can do is report based on my setup. I also don’t have a Windows set up with a Plex library. I used to when I first started with Plex but moved on to using a NAS so that library doesn’t exist any longer, and hasn’t for several years now. I can/do launch Plex from my Synology (or I can launch Plex from a browser) from time to time but the music (or other content) is stored on my Syno NAS.

You don’t need PMS on the same hardware that your files are stored on. I store my files on my Synology and point my PMS to my library on my Synology via my network. My Synology does not have an Intel processor so it can’t do the excellent QuickSync encoding that my Intel Windows PC can do.

I don’t this crashing issue is hardware related. It is likely something in the code of both Windows and Linux/Synology versions that causes a crash when PlexAmp tries to interact with it a certain way. Try setting PlexAmp to 128kbs when outside and see if that helps.

So sorry, I don’t think I was clear in my reply. Like you said, I also can play movies, music or look at photos on Plex on my Windows computer browser from files stored on my Syno NAS. And PlexAmp plays those same files.

I may adjust to a lower kbs as you suggest, but hopefully whatever code issue is causing the crash will get resolved so it won’t be necessary. After all, I can go on walks for many days without any issue. I agree with you that it seems likely to be something in the code but Atomatth would know best.

I was at home testing some new earbud headphones (going back and forth between the two pair I bought) and PlexAmp stopped. I came and turned my computer on, went to Synology and Plex had stopped (showing the manually stopped, which was not the case obviously). I am attaching the logs from my iPhone. I was on WiFi this time, not outside of the home.

Do you recall the track, album, or artist that was playing before the server stopped? Can you also grab your PMS logs?

Looking through these logs, what is ratingKey 108031 and 108033? You can use the app.plex.tv to check it out. Go to any movie, episode or album. The url in your browser should look something like this
https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/server/{SERVER_ID}/details?key=%2Flibrary%2Fmetadata%2F{ratingKey}&context=source%3Acontent.library~0~2

Replace the ratingKey value with 108031 or 108033 and remove everything afterwards.

It seems that the crash/halt/freeze is caused by transcoding the photo for the artist or album. Can you add these items to a playqueue or playlist and play them on Plexamp to see if these images consistently crash/halt/freeze the server.

I had started to type what I thought was playing when it crashed but instead, I followed your steps. Doing what you suggested above, it brought up the song that I was quite sure was playing (and then I was skipping as part of my earbuds testing).

It was a song from the Nat King Cole album “The Christmas album”. The song from it - L.O.V.E. - was what was playing. So I’m 99% certain that was the song playing. I had my library on a playlist of many different genres/eras. I then tried the other ratingKey value of 108033 and it said “Missing details” so I went back to the 108031.

That’s very interesting that you identified the rating key value number. As you said, it seems that you’ve identified that the crash/halt/freeze the server is being caused by transcoding of the the photo for the artist or album.

If I add these items to a playqueue or playlist to play on PlexAmp, should I do so while the key value is 108031, or should I bring it up in its normal browser that you showed first in your comments and then add to the playlist? Should I add all the songs from the album that LOVE is from, or just the song that was playing when it stopped on Syno?

Let me know and I’ll do the playlist, just make a new one and put songs from this album in it. Should I add some other songs as well from an album from an artist just to see?

I am attaching the PMS logs for you as requested.
I’m looking forward to hearing back what you find.

Hold up, why are you running Plex Media Server version: 1.41.5.9626-9ba082670?

Because of the issues herein, and with no solution based on the various contributors, I have held off updating. This afternoon I downloaded:

PlexMediaServer-1.43.0.10492-121068a07-x86_64.exe

Or PlexMediaServer-1.43.0.10492-121068a07-x86_64_DSM72.spk

I’m guessing you would advise updating it but would it address the transcoding issue you pointed out earlier today?

I created the playlist as you suggested but it is not showing up in PlexAmp yet. I am updating metadata so hopefully that will help. I see the playlist in my Plex app on my computer but it is not showing on my iPhone PlexAmp playlists or my iPad.

Can you provide some input on that? Thanks so much!

If you created a Playlist on Web and are not seeing it yet on Plexamp, you might need to kill the app (Plexamp) and reopen it. You should also be able to create Playlist in Plexamp. I would think just playing the album would be enough.
