Plexamp Squelch and Static Noise at end of Sweet Fade

Mac Server - Version 1.21.2.3943
Plexamp 3.4.1 on Desktop
Plexamp 3.4.0 on Android Pixel 2 Phone.

Ok so I am getting some weird squelch / static noise. The kind of noise you used to hear when you were scrolling down the dial on your car radio. Remember those? Don’t scroll to far to the left or right. :grinning:

Anyway, this is really weird, I mean at first I thought it was an extra fun thing to make it sound like I was scrolling through the radio and hearing some airwave noise. But it seems like at random both on my desktop app and my android app that I get this squelch and static happening just as the leaving track fades out completely.

Not sure if this is an app thing or if my server is to blame. Again its totally random when this happens. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?

hmm, that doesn’t sound right. almost sounds like the tracks in question are confusing the decoder or something.

can you reproduce it with the same tracks?

Yes I can reproduce this. Some context to help.

I sent you my logs from this morning, if searching the logs, at around 10:40AM to 10:50AM I got squelch/static. I don’t know if the logs show you the track names but if they do. There are two songs where the squelch/static happened that I heard it very loud for about 2 seconds worth of static. The songs in questions are Pure Morning from the band Placebo, fading out and a song called Crackin Up by Caesars Palace fading in. I got squelch/static.

Weird thing is, I tried to reproduce it right away, I went to the back to list. I played the track Pure Morning again, going into the track Crackin Up and the squelch static did not happen.

Two constant things I have noticed every time.

Constant 1, is that the static always happens at the end of the fade. Always on the new track coming in. Always at the absolute end of the fade out. Maybe the crossfade drops off early?

Constant 2, the static always happens either just before the album art of the incoming track comes into view or just after that. Its hard to tell. But I know it happens when the new track artwork is popping in.

Let me know if there is anything else you might need to help track down this issue. I will continue to listen and try to pinpoint what causes this.

thanks for the extra data. also important is whether you’re playing them directly or it’s showing Opus (a transcode). so there are a few variables:

  • direct play or transcode.
  • streaming (first play) or cached (second+)

you can clear caches after stopping playback to make sure it’s streaming, e.g.

i would clear caches, and just play a single song in question (add to a single item playlist, e.g.) and see if it reproduces. there’s nothing about the “fade” region which is special, it’s just overlapping the two tracks and hence confusing from which the audio is coming from.

if i were a betting man, i’d bet there is something about the file(s) in question which is offending the decoder.

Ok, cool. Here is what I did.

  1. Cleared the cache.
  2. Created a new playlist called test for static
  3. Added two songs to new playlist. ACDC and Beck
  4. Verify Song is streaming, AIFF 44/16. No Transcoding. Server verifies direct play. Says PCM audio.

First song AC/DC back in Black, ends new song Loser by Beck, starts, 15 Seconds into new song static happens. Static lasts about 1/2 to one second.

Skipped back to first song to see if it would do it again. On the second play, there was no static. After this went back and cleared the cache again. I let Beck Loser play, I fast forwarded the track, and let the next song fade in, Next song had static at about 10 seconds in.

Tried one more time went and cleared cache again. Went back to the test playlist with two tracks in it. First song ACDC back in black, second song Loser by Beck. 15 seconds into Beck Loser the static happened again right on cue. Playlist ended Plexamp added new tracks, the next song was Aerosmith Im Down. Static happened on this track also at about 15 seconds in.

Pretty much every song after that, where plexamp added the track there was static at about 15 seconds.

Each time full streaming. AIFF 44/16. Both tracks are AIFF BTW. I will message you my logs and upload the track files for you to review.

I can confirm I get this as well with going to or from aiff tracks from most other formats.

should be fixed in 3.4.2

It was fixed. I tried to reproduce after updating to 3.4.2 and everything is nice and sweet fadey again!
