Plexamp: use partial server path in smart playlists

I’d like to create some smart playlists that represent folders on the server because I add and remove files from the folders.

Can we use path in smart playlists? Supporting partial path or wildcards would be even nicer, e.g. foo/**/flac/**/bar/

Plexamp (and Plex in general) focus on organizing your media by metadata, not so much the file/folder structure (except when it comes to initially cataloging/matching your media)… hence there’s no filter for that available.

There’s a long standing suggestion to allow filtering by file names or parts of a file path.

I think we all understand metadata but still want path/filename as another piece of metadata. Given that the original feature has been opened for 10+ years, I have no hope that we’ll ever see it implemented :frowning:

@elan can we please make it happen? thank you.

The server doesn’t provide those APIs, so would take a fair bit of work, and you’re the only one I remember asking for it

I’m not the only one, Plex in general I think should support path as metadata.

@elan Symfonium can make a smart playlist with a “Path and file” filter from a PMS provider. Why can’t Plexamp do whatever Symfonium does?

i don’t know what the app is doing. you can filter on a folder specifically, but i don’t think thats what you’re asking for.

I would like to combine a folder filter with other filters in a smart playlist, e.g. only flac with a rating > 3 in some folder (and subfolders).

it’s the “and subfolders” which the server doesn’t do, afaik. but who organizes music in folders these days? it’s way better to use metadata.

but who organizes music in folders these days?

There are some old/dumb devices that only work with folders and m3u playlists, e.g. USB flash drives in cars.

Interesting, I created a playlist in Plexamp that uses “Track Codec”, it shows up in the PMS server but I can’t edit it via the web interface, it just crashes. I assume because it doesn’t understand the codec filter, I don’t see it in the web interface if I try to create the playlist there.
