The issue occurs with any file I have tested.

Apple TV stops playing the film after approximately 20 seconds and returns to the home screen. If I run Plex Home Theatre from my laptop, or run watch from a browser, or the Plex App from my iPad, the film plays OK.

Your PMS is oldish, try updating that.t

Do you have an MP4 file to test with?

I have updated PMS to 0.9.8.10 which I think is the latest version for Ubuntu and I get the same problem.

Do you have an MP4 file to test with?

I don't have an MP4 to hand, I'll dig one out.

I have installed PMS on my laptop - MBP 16GB RAM - OSX 10.9, running PMX 0.9.8.10.215-020456b and I get the same problem. I'm guessing this rules out the specific install of PMS and any potential resource problems PMS may be having as the laptop has a lot of memory and 34GB free disk space.

What happens if you run PlexConnect on the laptop?
What version of Python do you have on Linux?

I converted a film to MP4 using Handbrake and that seems to be doing OK, still running after 5 minutes.

The version of Python is 2.7.3

I moved PlexConnect onto my laptop and changed the DNS and I still get the same problem.

Try setting the log level to "High", creating a fresh one and posting a link to it here.
