Since it seems like all you're looking for is a reason why this is taking so long, it's frankly because software is hard. We've been speccing the requirements for this feature for a while, and the implementation has (I just counted) over 20 parts. This is not just something you do by writing a few lines of code in an evening over a beer.
So I guess, elan, that you are still speccing the requirements for this feature? How many parts of the implementation remain (1/20 or 19/20 or ...)? :O

I must admit, I am a trying person at times and can harp on....Elan is always extremely reserved, to the point, polite and has very well written responses...I took the time today to read all your posts MTII and from my point of view you're out of line...for a response like that from Elan you must have really pushed his buttons....
I do think you owe him an apology....
I know how frustrating it can be when things aren't working and features take ages to appear that you hoped for....but that's just life...I've been wanting Live TV in Plex for a long time and it looks like it wont ever happen...I do complain but the level of rudeness you've demonstrated in this thread is quite appalling....
For me I turned to XBMC for Live TV with PleXBMC for PMS integration....I still actively follow the Plex PVR thread in the hope that something will come of it but instead of just complaining I also did something about it...maybe you can't due to lacking in technical skills, time or what you want simply doesn't exist elsewhere...so just pay the $3.99 per month for the extra PlexPass account and stop whinging....the amount of time you've spent whinging you could have earned enough dollars to pay for a number of PlexPass accounts for a number of years....you can have what you want today...right now by doing this....
BTW, I needed to have CloudSyn doing what I want so I installed a second PMS (sharing the same library) and paid for an additional PlexPass account, I hope when family accounts come along I'll be able to stop doing this but it was the only way I could what I needed right now (watched/unwatched flags at a root level aka PlexPass level)...so I am prepared to put my money where my mouth is and so should you MTII (or go elsewhere)....
Because you were being too much of a smart-ass to merit a reply. And we don't announce timeframes for features.
But you did reply?
I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass. I just wondered if you were still speccing the implementation... Of course, I also think these things are taking way too long time. To me, it is totally fine that some things take a long time - but as for Plex, all things take a very long time (playlists, parental controls, PlexPass family plans). And that is frustrating...

You really think so? Do you mean that you have read all my posts in this thread or in the forums in general? Yeah, this thread got pretty heated, but please accept that not everyone shares your servile approach to how to interact with the developers. I don't know how to count this, but I can say that I feel pretty confident that for all the times I have been giving negative critisism, I have offered praise, construtividsm, help and evangialism twice as many times...
I may even suggest that it is elan that owes us an apology for not delivering things first discussed (~promised) almost a year ago (a PlexPass family plan)...

You do realise that I would need to buy three (soon four) extra PlexPass'es to get my family hooked up with individual accounts, right? Do you think $20 monthly (probably $25 in my local currency) is a reasonable price? I don't, especially when the platform still lacks basic functionality (playlists, parental controls) and when I can use other, more complete platforms totally free.
The solutions you describe are way too complicated for most people - being quite technically capable, I could pull it off, but unlike you I no longer have the time to spend so much time on things like this.
And yes, I definitely put my money where my mouth is - I no longer use Plex as my media platform... Still, I come here looking, every now and then, to see if things are progressing (they are not - not in the way I hope for). Why? Probably because I still see great promise in Plex!
(I was gonna write something along the lines of "grow up", but ... why bother?)

I thought it was funny. and honestly I have been with plex for almost 2 years and I still cannot believe what has been accomplished in that amount of time. You have to remember you have a couple of things YOU want for plex. But, elan has to hear this from thousands of different people about 100 different things and some saying the exact same thing you are about something completely different. Some of those things you mentioned are things i also have been waiting for. Its not the end of the world. It is either 4 dollars a month or 74 dollars a lifetime. Your not spending your life savings. You expect a lot for so little. But, im sure you have an iPad that the moment you bought it for 600 dollars it was outdated because the iphone that came out months before already has better stuff. But, you will still go out and by another. I also have one. Im just saying they are trying to give you the best. They are not trying to blow smoke. But, you didnt spend that much so lets calm down and wait it out while watching some HD movies on Plex ;)

I dont understand the big deal. I have 10 people on my plex. The ones that use the channels or use sync stay on my user name the others use their own. Why until it get introduced is it to hard to do? I have been doing that ever since they started multi user support with no issues.

I've been and enthusiatic user and evangialist of Plex for 4-5 years (been using two different accounts). And I've contributed (basic) code and helpful posts. And I've donated. And bought two copies of the iOS app (excluding the copies my friends and family have bought based on my enthusiastic recommendation). And a lifetime PlexPass.
So I honestly don't think that you can claim that I haven't payed my share.
But now I've lost that sacred enthusiasm. Things are moving way too slow and alternatives are just better, IMHO. However, as I really like the Plex concept and "feel", I keep coming back, hoping for positive developments. Sadly, I dom't find them.
You all agree that Plex is alive and kicking - great for you! However, if I was you, I would worry if you were in fact the minority when previous enthusiasts vocally loses faith...! :O
As for the "1000s of people request 1000s of features"-argument: That is why it is so nice to have the Feature Request and Bug Voting forum. Have you bothered to check which features are the most popular ones? Parental Controls and playlists, fx - coincidentially, those are feature anyone should be able to agree on are basic features of a media player platform, right? But what do we get instead? Esoteric cloudsync features that noone (right?) has requested...

I have two small kids. They have their own accounts (myPlex) to be able to have some sort of parental controls: They only are (/were - we don't use Plex these days) allowed to see some sections of the library (kids section) and are locked out (by IP adresses) of direct access on the LAN. If they were to use my account (PlexPass) to get syncing, that rudimentary parental control workaround would not function. So it is $25/month (not acceptable), "parental controls" or syncing. Not good!

I have 3 kids that need different access. 12 year old I give access to G, PG, and "PG-13 Approved" sections. My other 2 are younger so they get access to G and PG only. And of course my wife and I get access to everything.
For my needs, the way Plex works now, I can't use all Plexpass features at the same time. I get 2 choices
1.) Use my plexpass account for all 3 kids to sync to their iPads and lose user login based permissions. This also causes issues for me. What if I want to sync a movie to my iPad that I don't want my kids to have access to? I can't. I also lose the ability to separate younger and older kids content.
or
2.) Allow my kids to have the user login based permissions I want them to have, and lose sync capabilities. This is my current choice but if we travel they can't take their movies or shows with them.
I am patiently awaiting some kind of family solution.

Thanks Elan for all you do.
Exactly! I fear that you'll have to wait patiently for a long time...
MTII: for your info I have two kids MTII (including an 18 month old which is a very trying time)...I have my own IT company that takes up a lot of my time and also developing an Export Company that regularly takes me back and forth from China....I am extremely time poor however due to my technical skills (I am no expert but do have very good basic skills) I can knock something together rather quickly...
My advice: Good old traditional parenting until Plex FamilyPass has been released....personally I would pay the $25 per month without hesitation until the FamilyPass comes along rather than all this time wasting...maybe that's just me...
You say this:
And yes, I definitely put my money where my mouth is - I no longer use Plex as my media platform...
I am guessing you new platform gives you the features like Family Restrictions...if I may ask, what? Given that you're time poor and you wanting Family Access (restrictive access to the library for minors I guess from reading the thread?) what have you implemented? I am assume not XBMC as that would requite multi-user logins and setting up a mySQL server, all do-able but for someone time-poor I am guessing you've found something that out of the box does what you want? If yes...please please tell us what it is?
BTW MTII, nobody is suggesting that the FamilyPass membership isn't a great thing...just hasn't been released and whilst frustrating it's just a fact....I know that the Plex Team would be running on very thin margins and bugger all profit margins (if any)....so if you can contribute to code please roll up your sleeves and help out.

I use iTunes! And I really like it! Yes, that may make me ... old school - but it actually works beautifully (this comes from a die hard tech guy with semi-nerdy tendencies). Even more so, since my devices are all made by Apple.
Yes, I need to make sure my media are in iTunes compliant formats, but actually - think about it - m4vs are more universal than, say mkvs. I also receive my share of mkvs, but I've found a way to quickly remux (and metadata tag) these files to m4vs.
And yes, iTunes in combo with the AppleTV is very good: Smart playlists, syncing, beautiful native TV interface, fast, full and greatly implemented parental controls, controllable via the Apple iOS Remote app, Home Sharing (not that fast, sadly). AND IT IS FREE!
I don't detail this to belittle Plex - I'm just saying that for me (and for a lot of other main stream time-poor parents and non-techies, I'd guess) it is superior to Plex. And that the direction and pace that Plex moves in does not remedy that sad difference...
