PMP Playback Error - "An error occurred trying to play ...."

Server Version#: 1.13.9.5456
Player Version#: 2.21.0.914

I am unable to play any video files in PMP on my Windows 10 machine. I get the same error for every file. I’ve confirmed it is not a server issue as the files play fine both on the Android app, the UWP version, and on the Web. I’ve uninstalled, deleted the PMP AppData folder, re-installed, and got the same issue. I’ve rolled back to the 2.19 version and it still occurs. I’ve updated my video driver to the latest from Nvidia and it still has the same error. I am at a loss as to why this is occurring.

Me and all of my users that use PMP are having the same issue. Plex apps on other devices, OpenPHT, and the web app are working for me. PMP was working yesterday and I didn’t mess with anything so idk what happened…

Yepp. Same issue here. Yesterday, everything worked fine. Playback with the Browser works fine. Only PMP is broken. Not only Video files, but also music isnt playing anymore.

I’m wondering how this can happen. I havent updated the server or the app or anything else on the system?!?

I’ll join the thread here, came back from holiday and can’t play any file from PMP that is installed on my intel NUC… :frowning:

Having the same issue. Does not appear to be server related as media is playable via the web player and other clients (smart tv / apple tv / etc). The Plex Media Player client (v2.21.0.914) on Win10Pro however is logging a certificate validation failure whenever I attempt to play anything. The logged error is:

“The certificate received from the remote server has not validated correctly. The error code is 0x80092013. The TLS connection request has failed.”

This certificate in question appears to be the “*.plex.direct” wildcard cert.

Having the same issues. All clients running Plex Media Player x64 throw the mentioned error. All other clients are fine, including the W10 App. What I found interesting: Not all installations failed simultaneously.

Yeah, i figure this has been since the issue with the CA.
It works if you turn off secure, but thats just a workaround.
No plex employee is answering for the last 30 hours or so?
Multiple users affected and we are many of us plexpass users.

As I understand it, turning off secure only works if you’re hitting your server over the LAN. On the road the system will always require secure.

But since there are alternative ways to access the server (web gui/smart tv app), this is just an inconvenience for me. I can’t imagine anyone will be working on this over the weekend so I don’t expect a patch before next week. It’s an unwritten coder rule that you never make changes on a Friday.

Same issue. All metadata is available but Player cannot access music or photos. App can access Photos but not Music. All Win 10. Android and Roku work as expected. Totally generic error message “can’t play” and log files not too helpful.

it was even on Thursday this issue started happening tho.
they are just not realizing it or checking their forums.

Same issue here. PMP updated and then the playback error started. Reinstalled and roll back didnt fix it.
Logged onto my friends account that everything is on and same issue with PMP.

Same issue here…
→ All Windows 10 Players are not working…
On the embedded - Linux - platform it is working…

Same issue, on W10 the native player stucks, nothing helped yet

WEB, Xplay and Android is OK.

Hi totand80,

just deactivate the option “secure connections” and it will work again as stated above, some posts earlier.

Danny

Same issue for me as well, re-installed Plex media player, repaired installation, uninstalled, cleared out all appdata, cache (plex files I could find), re-installed again… same issue…

I tried to allow insecure connections on local network option in Plex Media Player (that did not work for me)… I then tried the always option for insecure connections and it did not work either… I’m not happy to disable this on the server side so have not tried that as yet…

I agree, but plex members are not even checking this post as it seems.
so frustrating.

Same here, glad I checked this forum. Was tearing my hair out going through log files. Many seem to point to the certificate chain. Guess there’s a workaround…

I can also confirm if you disable secure connections on the server end (under networking) Plex media Player for Windows then starts to work again… I’m not happy leaving it using no encryption so I’ll have to wait for Plex member to fix this bug/issue…

for those of you who are interested this is the setting that will get it working on your server settings:

I set mine to disabled and started a new video, PMP crashed after about two seconds of trying to load the video. Launching PMP afterwards, the video is already playing once the application loads. All videos will be working at that point. Changing Secure Connections back to Preferred will allow PMP to still function but if I close then re-open the app, the Activity monitor is showing two separate instances of the same stream in progress with the video I was playing still going until I stop it.

Not sure if this is related to a problem we had issuing certs last week (leading to secure connections not working). Should be resolved now, you may need to restart the server to have it fetch a cert (if expired).
