PMP unable to play any content after server upgrade

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4523
Player Version#: 2.58.0.1076

I’m currently “stuck” on Plex server 1.22.3.4523. I’ve upgraded to multiple different versions, including the most recent, but when I do, Plex Media Player can’t play anything (ie movies, TV shows or even music) and I just get a general “playback error” message. If I roll back to 1.22.3.4523, it works again as normal. The issue seems to only impact Plex Media Player, as it still operates normally through a web browser or on a tablet (Android).

The server is running on a QNAP NAS.

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Plex Media Player. It’s currently running on Windows 7, so trying the new Plex HTPC is not an option until I am able to upgrade the OS.

After upgrading I’ve even left the server running idle in case it needed to update the database or something. Also have cleaned the bundles and optimized the database.

I initially started a thread in the server category, which was then suggested I create a new thread in the Players category. Link to that thread which may be useful as it already has a copy of my logs uploaded:

This is for Windows 10. Windows 7 may have things in different locations.

Try the uninstall / reinstall again. After uninstalling, manually remove the Plex Media Player folder in AppData/Local as well (where PMP stores logs, cache, etc).

The default location is c:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Plex Media Player.

AppData is hidden by default. In Windows Explorer, select the View tab, then check the box next to Hidden items in the Show/hide area.

Only delete the Plex Media Player folder. If you run Plex Media Server on the same system you may see a folder for it as well. Don’t delete that. It has your library info, metadata, etc for your server.

Thanks for the feedback FordGuy61.

I was pretty sure I had tried your suggestion before, but it’s been ages since I did the reinstall and I couldn’t quite remember. And there is no harm running through it again so I did as you recommended: uninstalled PMP, deleted the PlexMediaPlayer folder, and then reinstalled. Unfortunately it still throws the same general “playback error” message. I even created a new user on the Win7 system to try with a fresh/clean profile, but still the same.

On a whim, I tried using OpenPHT, which is something I still had installed on the Win7 box and it worked without any issue. I had installed it as a potential replacement several years ago when Plex had announced they were discontinuing the Plex Home Theater application and it didn’t sound like it was going to be replaced by anything else.

Is there anything else I could possibly try, or is there any way to get some official support from Plex? Their “contact us” page indicates that any support requests will simply be ignored.

I see a new version of the server has just been released, 1.24.5.5173. In the release notes it indicates that there are changes in the database. Will there be any issues if I try to downgrade back to 1.22.3.4523 if the new version doesn’t fix the issue?
