macOS: 10.14.6 (18G9323) - released Jul 2019, last updated Jul 2021, nick is Mojave
known working version: 1.28.2.6151-914ddd2b3 (stable)
known working version: 1.29.0.6244-819d3678c (stable)
Summary
On a 10.14.6 during PMS Setup, no place to enter the Friendly Name, and if I click on the Next button, an infinite spinner replaces the word Next. This topic is very similar to my previous post
against beta 1.29.1.6316
In the hosted web app Settings → Authorized Devices remove the Mac server if it’s listed.
Empty Mac trash
In Safari close any tabs and do History → Clear History → All History → Clear History
Restart the Mac → Reopen windows not checked
Extract PMS from the zip and drop it into /Applications.
Start Safari and ( ⇧⌘N ) to open a new Private Window.
Close the non-private window.
Double click the Plex Media Server app in /Applications
Accept a popup message about being unsigned or unverified. PMS is blocked.
CTRL+Right Click on the Plex Media Server app in /Applications and choose Open
PMS runs and Safari loads the Plex Sign-in page.
Sign-in to Plex
Either Setup:
starts to 127.0.0.1:32400/web correctly and will move on to the next step.
or it spins but doesn’t actually load the URL in it’s location bar, and you have to click the URL and hit Return to make it load.
or setup goes to app.plex.tv which isn’t the correct redirect and you need to visit http://127.0.0.1:32400/web by pasting that into the same tab’s url bar and hitting Return
After Setup starts in one of the above ways, you’re asked for your PIN if you’re in a Plex Home.
Then it loads the first Setup screen where I click the GOT IT! button.
On the next page I can’t enter the Name,
and if I click Next then Setup hangs where the word Next is replaced by an infinite spinner.
While being stuck with an endless spinner on the Naming step, I thought I’d investigate what other people are saying recently about accessing their server. So I found that if I bail out of the setup by simply closing Safari, then if I start Plex for Mac,
I can connect securely to the server (it’s partially installed and claimed)
I can’t administer it because I see Server settings are unavailable.
footnotes
I made a screen recording of the install that’s 350 MB.
It displays the Safari Javascript console but my Plex token keeps appearing. So I’m not posting it. In there I see HTML error 500s trying to load http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/:/prefs?...
but I forgot to issue that command using a curl to see what happens as of this last edit.
hey thanks for reading
EDIT 25 Nov - better screenshots
EDIT 26 Nov - added unable to name as the more accurate, initial error.
Weird. I don’t remember this thread but it shows I closed it.
I’ve reopened it so we can discuss.
Mind trying this again, but this time, on that naming step, turn off the option to allow remote access. I’m wondering if that setting is causing the issue. That setting is to enable automatically remote access so it requires your router to be configured for UPnP. If that isn’t available, I’m wondering if that is causing this to break. Turning that setting off should avoid the issue during this step.
You might be onto something. I never have uPnP set. I hardwire port 2XXXX to my 32400 server IP. With 1.29.2 I could get to server settings so I would not be able to adjust any of the network/general settings. Rolled back to 1.29.0 and PMS came back to normal.
Oh I thought when you said I responded in that thread you meant, yes I know, thanks xD
So we are back open for turkey day!
OMG sorry about that picture above. That was taken only to get the photo. oops. No sir I do not ever use Remote Access nor enable it during setup. I also have UPnP disabled on my entire LAN and all routers.
This issue persists in the latest beta 1.30.0.6442, unable to Friendly Name.
The MacOS fixes in the new beta solved the unsigned application popup, thanks.
It’s signed and says Apple checked it for malicious software. I click Open.
At the Plex Sign-in screen I use my email, pass, and 2FA code.
I’m redirected to app.plex.tv for the setup and see my Plex Home choose User screen.
I choose my user and then I enter my PIN.
I get an endless spinner where it says Initializing Plex Media Server, but it’s clear the URL is not the local URL anyway. So it’s never going to work, and doesn’t if I click in and hit enter.
The correct method as usual is to enter http://127.0.0.1:32400/web in the same tab that’s already signed in, and that will make setup start,
where I get stuck at Friendly Naming.
clip of what I saw, steps (5) thru (7)
And if I run PMS from the Terminal I see this output

Thank you all!
EDIT 1: the clip shows me waiting at Initializing Plex Media Server for a few seconds, but it was much longer. I cut about a minute out of the video there. I’ve let it sit for as long as 5min. I just don’t think it was doing anything, like previous installs have taught me.
