PMS 1.40.2.8395 not starting after installing update

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Player Version#: current through web browsers - Safari, FireFox and Chrome
just installed the 1.40.2.8395 update on M1 Mac Mini, macOS Sonoma 14.4.1. the server will not start - just says ‘Server is starting’ with the wheel going round in the Menu bar. i left it like this for half hour before i rebooted but same thing after a reboot. Rolled back to the previous version, server still doesn’t start so put the latest one back on. Trying to access the logs through the browser it says my server is unreachable. no errors in the Mac console about Plex

help please! is there somewhere else i can get logs rather than through the browser?

I had the same problem.
You have to wait a little.
I saw in the processor tasks that plex was working.
And it came back after 15 minutes

thanks Angel, i can see it working away in the activity monitor, currently at 7GB bytes written and 241GB bytes read - do you know if this is going to read my entire library before the server actually starts?

never mind - it’s back! thanks for replying so quickly anyway

For reference it took 53 minutes for mine to start on an old 2010 Mac mini with a very large library.

I don’t really want to try restarting to see if this is a one off relating to the new release or now on every start up.

  • edit - I chanced it and pleased to report it took a few seconds the second time. There’s also part of the release note saying please be patient when updating to this version

Thought I’d share my experience. M1 Mac mini, 7 TB library. I was absolutely convinced that after 45 minutes or so that something was wrong. It kept trying to establish a connection, failing, and retrying. Checking Activity Monitor, there were 18 recent hangs and it was listed as Not Responding. I force quit the media server, relaunched and all is good. Preferences shows this latest version number and up to date.

I have a media server on Windows 10 with 500TB of media. It took 6 hours to update the database. By far the longest database update I’ve experienced.

Well I guess my library is gone (:
Been hours and its still dead.
FML - 330TB
Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 v4
Disastrous update - I really wish they’d test them more

can you see Plex Media Server in the Activity Monitor?

I hate to be that guy but if you have 330TB of data you should have a backup of your plex database. And you can use this tool to deal with problems. I ran this tool ahead of time and I was still on the old DB schema (1.32.* version) and the update installed and started up within a minute. I only found this thread because I was looking for people who had issues, trying to do due diligence because of course the last thing I want to do today is rebuild my plex server.

Ok so every time I reboot the Mac the Plex drop down says ‘Server is starting’ and in Activity Monitor I need to wait until the Plex Media Server process reads around 260GB data before it lets me back in. And on occasion it crashes and when I start it again I have to wait for it to read around 260GB data before I can get back into it

Not the greatest patch…
