Good evening!
Immediately after installing the latest PMS update from the plex pass channel on the evening of June 14th, my server has been crashing very frequently. I finally narrowed it down to remote streaming causing the crashes (mainly from Nivida shields) and furthermore it is caused by transcoding from what I can tell. Any direct play/stream is fine and all local playback is fine as it is direct. Reading some other posts that have popped up around the same time as my issue started I turned off HW transcoding as a work around and that did seem to fix the issue although CPU usage went from ~10% on HW transcoding to ~65% with HW transcoding disabled - and this is on an i7-8700K with 32GB ram. I have been using HW transcoding with intel since the Beta came out years ago with no issues so I’m not sure if something in Windows suddenly broke it or the latest PMS update broke it (crashes started immediately after the update to PMS). Plex is NOT running as a service, it is Starting using the “Start Plex Media Server at Login”. I am not opposed to purchasing a dedicatd graphics card if that is what is needed for hardware transcoding but I feel something else may be the issue since it has worked flawlessly from the HW transcoding beta until now. I was hoping the update last week that stated it fixed a transcoding issue would fix my problem but no luck.
This PC is dedicated to plex and media management, isn’t used for general day to day activity and I have disabled Malwarebytes premium to make sure that wasn’t in the way somehow.
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions please let me know I would love to get this working properly again.
I have logs but would prefer to PM them to someone if possible as they contain my full name, email etc.
I apologize if I have upset you, I was just trying to keep my issues/replies/thread separate from another users.
You stated
“These are known to arise if the Plex Media Server is run as a service, scheduled task or through RDP,
The solution is a choice between hardware acceleration being disabled,or
not to run Plex Media server as service / shceduled task or via rdp
Hardware Acceleration setting is in server / settings / transcoder”
I have been using hardware acceleration since the day it was available in the beta with no issuese, and I am not using Plex as a service/scheduled task etc. The issue immediately started after an update to Plex and the only way for me to fix it is to turn off hardware decoding.
You also said
" I can see several crash reports from your server May 29th and then on June 12th to June 16th. All the crashes are in the intel hardware encoding dllL mfx_mft_h264ve_32.dll"
There was nights I had to restart the Plex server 8 times to get through a TV show (direct play local, friend was trying to stream remote as well) so if you only see several crashes total that doesn’t seem right unless there are many crashes in each crash report.
I am trying to work on this more today, installed all available Windows updates aside from 1903, I am updating everything in the ASRock app for motherboard drivers, and there is actually a bios update that was released within the last week or so - I am hopeful the combination of this stuff resolves my issue. Enabling the UNO experience did fix the other issue with the on deck, recently added etc missing on the shield when using auto login so I can cross that off my list atleast.
If nothing I do today gets this working with all the updates are you confident I could buy an Nvidia card such as the Quadro and have my issue fixed?
