The problem that I have always presents itself let’s say and appears when sometime I have to restart the QNAP NAS for firmware updates or disconnect the USB drives where the movies are located for moving or whatever.
Basically when I perform one of the operations described above it happens that the USB unit changes ID and PLEX no longer finds the files in the libraries as the id of the peripheral on which it points has changed.
Example:
on PLEX a library is located here: / share / external / DEV3805_1 / Francesco Sole
But now the USB HD has changed ID and is DEV3802_1
I had found a workaround by disconnecting and reconnecting the USB disk until it reassigned the old ID identical to the one stored in the PLEX library but since yesterday I can no longer successfully resume the same ID.
I could simply reposition the library on the new ID but this would entail rereading the library and the possible appearance of duplicates as plex is not so intelligent as to recreate it by eliminating the broken links and it is also a cumbersome system.
Is there a safer, faster and correct method to restore the library even when the usb disc ID changes? I still have this problem, I have restarted the nas 10 times, removing the HD but the IDs are the new ones …
USB Drives on a QNAP was never intended to be used as extension of the local storage, and is assigned a random number when detected, so sadly there’s nothing you can do about that.
You don’t mention the QNAP model you got, but can only recommend you look into a QNAP Expansion unit
Thanks for the answer, my QNAP is TS-251A. I used external device usb because is simple to share to other pc when i need and because the two internal hdsik are already full. Is sad that Plex dont have a different method to identify the external drives to the nas.
What happens if I add the new path with the new ID to the Plex library folder without deleting the old one (if you change the ID again and go back to the old one)? Are duplicates created or is something damaged? It wouldn’t be a big deal to change or add the new ID to the library if Plex on QNAP wasn’t that slow. I have a library of 6000 videos and it takes a whole day to analyze the folder again.
Example:
old path: /share/external/DEV3802_1/Francesco Sole
new path (added): /share/external/DEV3805_1/Francesco Sole
You would have to disable Empty Trash after Scanning and then refresh
After that, all medias will be doubled!
To get around that, remove the old not used path, followed by yet a refresh
I did not understand correctly, sorry: to avoid finding duplicate media do I have to disable this function " Empty Trash after Scanning"? Can I keep the old address and add only the new one if I enable this function? Or am I misunderstanding what you wrote?

I don’t want to duplicate the media, just add the new path to the old one and prevent that the media duplicating itself.
