Podcast queue issue

Issues with podcasts on iOS (app version 5.13) discovered this week:

  • Playing an episode automatically adds 20 previous episodes to the queue despite already listening to those episodes.
  • If I miss a few episodes I will go to play the oldest unlistened episode and instead of adding the newer unlistened episodes to the queue it adds 20 older episodes despite already listening to those.
  • Cannot edit or clear the queue list: If i try to clear that queue list so it doesn’t auto-play the older episodes, it displays an error indicating “Received empty Play Queue” and the queue list does not clear.

This has been difficult because I listen to podcasts when I go to sleep, and often fall asleep while listening. So what has been happening is it starts auto-playing the older episodes I already listened to and since I can’t clear the queue it plays all night. Previously, I could play an episode, add 1 or 2 other episodes to my queue then when it’s over it stops therefore it doesn’t play all night long.

Hoping we can get back to that, or at least be able to clear the queue so I can start an episode and clear the queue so it doesn’t keep playing all night.

A quick workaround for this is to go to each podcast and set sort order to oldest first. This will cause the queue to be reversed and playback stops once all the more recent ones have been played.

If instead you wanted to listen just that single episode, I can’t really help you. But at least this allows me to listen to all unlistened episodes in one go.

most of the shows i listen to are sorted newest first (current affairs, etc), but a couple of them are sorted oldest first (serialized series).

I get what you’re saying though. However, if an episode is already marked as played Plex should be smart enough to not re-add those episodes to the play queue. Regardless, I should still be able to clear or edit the queue. That doesn’t work at all.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong. I’m definitely not defending the current behavior. I discovered the sort order effect by accident (or well by guessing).

The current behavior is pretty erratic and I was reporting an other issue with the sort order just today. The podcasts feel like a completely different thing than everything else. In most other places, hitting play does what you see on the screen. In podcasts, it defaults to the feed in configured sort order.

Just noticed that in Android there is an option to set sleep timer so that playback ends after current episode. Maybe that can be used as a workaround for the time being…

You have a sleep timer? That feature isn’t on iOS yet that I can see.

I think this is related. On iOS the podcast used to stop after the episode. Now the podcasts just continue episode after episode. I’m always waking up to Rachel Maddow still talking :grimacing:

Is this expected behaviour? If so, we definitely need a sleep timer on iOS.

There used to be a way to add just a single episode to the queue (using Add to Queue instead of Play), but that has since been changed to add basically all episodes into the queue.

I am using iOS and experiencing the inability to play other podcasts… it seems to keep going back to the full queue of the other episodes instead of playing the podcast I am attempting at the moment. I can not add other episodes to my queue and attempting to clear the queue or delete episodes individually from queue receives an “uh oh” error response. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
