Poor quality on outside network

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2571
Player Version#: ???

I have only recently started my Plex journey and have it working quite well at home. However, when I go over to friend’s house and try to play a movie there, the quality is absolutely horrible. I don’t mean like 480p or anything, I mean 240p or lower probably. I know that the quality will be worse because I’m on a different network, but this is crazy how bad it is. Unwatchable!

I couldn’t find any solid answer on here so far, so hoping for some help and straight answers. I have tried setting the quality manually, tried letting it choose quality. Internet speeds at both places are 300 mbps or more.

Is there any fix for this, or can I only access this at home if I want to be able to actually watch something?

Let’s first determine if your server is accessible from the outside at all.
Please do this when you’re at home.

Use the web app https://app.plex.tv
Go to Settings - Server - Remote Access
grafik
Note down the public IP and Port number.

Now go to canyouseeme.org
grafik

First, compare the IP that is shown there as ‘Your IP’ with the one from plex.
Are the two identical?

Yes: replace the ‘Port to check’ 80 with the port number from plex and perform ‘Check Port’
No: You are in a “double NAT” situation, which might be solvable if you

Otherwise you will only be able to use the Plex Relay connection which, as you have seen, is restricted in the available bandwidth. https://support.plex.tv/articles/21676168-accessing-a-server-through-relay/

Thank you for the reply!

I followed your instructions and yes, the IP in remote access is my actual IP.
However, on canyouseeme.org I get an error for both port 80 and the port listed in Plex Remote Access.

If I have to use Plex Relay, is the premium version really going to make enough of a difference for me?

Plex Pass only doubles the bandwidth limit to 2mbps. This is hardly enough for mobile phone screens. So, I reckon, no.
Try the ‘manual portforwarding’ described in the above link.

Thank you so very very much! I managed to figure out the port forwarding and the quality is SOOOOOOO much better now! Thanks a ton for the tips and help!
