Port 37243 forwarded to 32400 works for five seconds and then quits

Server Version#: 4.66.1
Player Version#:
I’m trying to get my second server to operate remotely without being tunneled through Plex. My first server is using 32400 internally and externally, so I’ve forwarded 37243 externally to 32400 internally in my router, and of course forwarding that to the static IP of my second server. When I manually specify 37243 and hit retry after the Plex servers think about it for a while everything connects through my router and I get a green light for about five or ten seconds. Then I’m right back to an indirect connection through the Plex universe. I must have forgotten something, but for the life of me I can’t think what it might be.

Silly questions first…

  • the manual port forward is active/enabled?
  • you’re using port forwards for both machines (even if you’re using the same public/internal ports for the 1st server)?
  • can you see/access the router’s public IP on tcp/37243 from outside your home network (e.g. using canyouseeme.org)?
  • have you tried streaming anything remotely from that 2nd server to verify this is not just a glitch with the remote access status indicator?
  • any firewalls / security tools which could interfere with the traffic to the 2nd server?

Thanks Tom–

Yes, I’ve set everything up the same on both servers, other than for the first server I just used 32400 for public and private ports. For the second server I forwarded publicIP:37243 to privateIP:32400. The firewall allows all Plex apps through. However, I can’t see my publicIP:37243, so clearly I’ve left something out/done something wrong. My router is a Cisco RV325, which is fairly straighforward in terms of port forwarding, and I have all of my Synology servers available remotely through it, along with my first Plex server, so I’m not sure where to go from here.

To verify there’s nothing wrong inside your home network/ on the 2nd PMS you could try the following:

  1. Disable the manual port forwarding for server 1
  2. Configure the 2nd port forward to use port 32400 in your router and the Plex remote access configuration
  3. retest the connection

We know remote access over port 32400 used to work… so if it doesn’t connect with your 2nd server, there’s probably an issue in your server configuration (or the host). If the connection works with port 32400 while it didn’t with the other port, there might be some ISP port blocking involved.

It wouldn’t be the first time, that internal and external port number are swapped in the port forwarding rule. Simply due to a confusing user interface design of the router software.
You should verify this.

Yes, that’s actually the first thing that I double and triple checked. It’s definitely going the right direction. I’ve made that mistake before.

Thanks Tom–

Excellent idea, I should have thought of that. I’ll do that this afternoon.

I’m a bit embarassed, I should have rebooted the system at least once before I decided that I had something screwed up. I powered the system up when I got home and everything was working. Sorry to have bothered you guys, but thanks VERY much for the good ideas. Any of them could have led to one of the things I could have easily missed.
