Possible Idea? Chomecast like Plex Cast Device based on Rasplex

Hi Community

I've been using Rasplex for quite a while now and I noticed during using ist, that I actually never use the interface on the Rasplex directly, instead I control the device via iPad Mini and the Plex App. So there came my Idea to strip down the Rasplex Project to a simple receiver device (aka the current announced Plex on Chromecast) without any Navigation, any Clutter and any Cover caches etc. etc.

What do you think? Is this possible? Would such a device be in any way desirable beside my wishing it?

Greetings from Switzerland :)

Sounds like aTV with Airplay to me...

I think the question would most likely be what would be the benefit of a branch that only had the ability to do remote play?  The work to strip the standard builds features out would really only impact storage space on the SD card... Would still need Avahi for discovery and some level of GUI so you are only striping out the caching/indexing of the shows.

I would agree with Baa that this is basically becoming an airplay receiver and there are multiple ways to do that already including a 100$ off the shelf one with airplay.

I've been sort of doing this for a while. I have a raspberry pi running raspbmc. I've installed plexbmc video plugin and plexbmc helper.

This allows me to browse and play my media on the TV (using the TV remote thanks to the Pi's HDMI CEC support). But more importantly I can use the Windows Phone, Android or Plex Web apps to browse and select media and then play to the pi (I have the pi named as PLEXBMC PI and this shows up on the various devices as a play-to device). There's remote control support from the source device if necessary, but since the Pi uses the TV's remote it's as easy to use that to pause / rewind etc.

The only flaw with this system is that Plexbmc doesn't yet support the Now Playing feature, but I believe that's being worked on. Otherwise it's a pretty neat solution.

Yes you can, long press on a movie/music in the app on android or ios and you should get a play on screen. Select the device with the name you gave your rasplex.
