Prefer HD Recording - not working as channel wrongly marked as HD and not SD

So as the Six Nations starts, I see there is still issues with recording. Which seems to be because a show does not have “HD” against it! I’m just so fed up with DVR issues…

My show recording is setup to record “Live: Six Nations Rugby”, it’s being aired on different channels (101, 103 and 1, 3 (and some radio stations)). Channels 1 and 3 are SD channels, and 101, 103 are HD channels.

Plex has decided to record channel 1, instead of 101, as the guide data doesn’t have the episode marked as “HD” on channel 101. But advanced recording settings is set to “prefer HD” and has to be set to “any channel” as I cannot select more than one channel, ideally 101 and 103. I also cant setup different recording settings for the to HD channels (101, 103) as the show name is the same. I cant tell Plex to record HD Only, as it will not have recorded the show at all.

Does anyone know if I’m simply missing something? I don’t want to have to manually setup recordings, and I don’t want to mess with EPG XML stuff.

@Minxster I’ve had this issue for awhile now. I’ve just got into the habit of just limiting which channel to record from and there hasn’t been any issues since.

@HomeMediaServer2018 there’s the problem, I can’t limit the channel as the same show is (correctly) on 2 different channels, and Plex won’t let me select more than one.

I know it’s an odd use case, but it’s not a new problem either :disappointed_relieved:

@Minxster Might be a stupid question on my part, but why would you want to record the same show on two channels?

@HomeMediaServer2018 excellent question… The Six Nations rugby matches are aired on different channels, so some matches are one channel and other matches on another.

@Minxster Now I got you, so same show, but different match. That’s very weird that it won’t let you record them. What tuner are you using?

@HomeMediaServer2018 maybe I didn’t explain it properly in my original post :man_shrugging:

In the UK we have SD channels and then HD versions of the SD channels; this is only for a handful of channels.

So channels 1 and 3 are SD, and 101 and 103 are their HD equilivent.

Hopefully it now makes sense the problem I’m having.

@Minxster I’m also in the UK. If I want to record BBC1 HD for instance I specify to record on channel 101 so that it records the HD version. The reason why I asked which tuner are you using is to see if it’s a tuner issue as I use the HDHomerun connect duo.

No, no; no tuner issue at all, it’s a HDHR5-4DT (HDHomeRun CONNECT QUATRO).

Once you setup the recoding, Plex shows that the “show” as being on channels: 001, 003, 034, 101, 103, 706… It’s all specific to the Six Nations, so I can’t tell the show to only record on 101 as it’ll miss the recordings for 103. And if I select “HD Only”, it thinks there is no HD version of matches from the BBC - this is because the BBC guide info does not have a HD attribute associated with the guide entry.

It all sounds like a mess, but at the moment I have two options. 1) delete channel 001 from my Plex guide, 2) Manually setup TV recordings.

Neither of these are what I really want to do, but Plex just isn’t flexible enough to allow me to do what I want.

@Minxster I got around that issue by having two of the HDHomeRun Duo’s. That way you can setup recordings on one duo and the other even though their is the same show name on other channels. Hope that makes sense.

It’s good you got around this issue. I’m not able to just grab a 2nd tuner for this. That said, I just thought to myself “Why doesn’t Plex to know what channels are HD, that way you could ask it to “prefer HD channels””… Then I saw this:

So Plex does have something similar to this, but I can’t ‘edit’ what is HD (or SD). I’ll try and remove the tuner and re-add it again to see if there is anything in there. But a quick forum search shows that other people have seen this ‘problem’ early last year.

If in doubt, I’ll just removed the “other channels” from the DVR while the Six Nations is on. But I really wish there was a proper way to report problems to Plex and see/get results. I hate having to hack at things to get things changed!
