All recordings are set to HD Preferred and they are recording SD now. This was working up to a week ago (Or so). Everything that records is now SD. I tried Deleting all DVRs and re-adding.

Running into the same problem with same Plex server and HDHomeRun PRIME 192.168.1.24:80
Will add that when played as live TV through Plex, comes through in HD. Also, even when I restrict recordings to the HD channel, it is dropping to the SD. Started with CBS and CW, but it is starting to spread to other channels as well.
Is there anything we can do to get Plex team members to look into this? Most of the time it just says enter into Forum but can’t see how they can look at every forum?
Interesting. I’m not having that issue. HD shows and channels are showing in my guide and can play via Live TV through Plex. DVR, however, is not picking that up.
UPDATED: After playing around for hours yesterday (cause every change required a Guide update), the problem appears to be that Comcast has changed their digitial numbering. So, for example, SD would be 05, HD is/was 105, but now it is also 1005. 105 is still be recognized as a channel…but when recorded is SD (even when displaying HD, though that testing got a bit fraught). More importantly, even when 105 isn’t activated, 1005 (which will play live) isn’t recognized by the DVR for recording and it falls back to SD. So appears that the number range is out of the DVRs recognition now, on a guess.
Anyone at Plex central have thoughts? Right now the DVR is about useless for me as SD recordings through Plex are unwatchable on my screen…way too fuzzy. Going on two weeks now and getting frustrated with the lack of help, or even acknowledgment, from a product team I used to extol (even when there some nasty bugs because you fixed them quickly).
Similar issues in the UK so I don’t think this is limited to comcast channel number changes. Recordings set to Prefer HD record SD even though an HD airing is available. Recordings set to HD Only do not record. Recordings set to specific HD channel and Prefer HD record HD fine. In the guide, listings appear fine, but if I filter the guide to HD channels, the channels show but there’s no listing detail
this all seems very familiar… has a fix from about 2 years ago been regressed some how?
I am seeing the same issue with UK channels. It seems like the channels are labelled as HD but the programming isn’t. I only got a 480i recording off similar settings so I am going to test some more recordings.
I wonder why the HD channels would show listings in the unfiltered view if that were the case? FYI deleted DVR and all recording schedules, recreated the whole lot, no change! Ho hum. Manual preferred channel will have to be the way I guess.
From what i gather it is all based upon the episode details (being an HD channel is irrelevant)
When a shows airs on BBC One, The episodes do not have an HD flag on them
So when you are viewing all channels, the EPG data is correct, doesnt matter if it’s HD or SD
When you switch to the HD only view, Plex does not think the episodes on 101 are HD (no episode flag for HD), so the episodes are not in HD (according to the flag set), and are therefore ignored as you only want to see HD content
+1 on this issue. Windows 10 server. UK. HD channels play and show guide data fine*. When I set a recording by choosing the airing on the HD channel and ‘Prefer HD’ is selected, the show that actually records is from the SD channel. If I select ‘HD only’ the recording does not take place at all and doesn’t appear in the DVR schedule.
*EDIT: scrolling to the channels when showing the full guide shows the data fine. If I use the filter for HD channels only, I get ‘Unknown Airing’ as others show
Seems to be an EPG data issue, with the episodes not being tagged HD while the channels are. Remind me why I pay for this service again and fix this please Plex…
I dont have Plex Pass anymore, so just going off memory here
Ignore any settings for HD
Set the recording on the HD channel, then in advanced settings for this recordings, set the limit to channel as the HD channel
So if you want to record BBC 1, using Eastenders as an example
Select Eastenders on BBC 1 HD and set it to record Eastenders
In the bottom left should be an option for advanced options
In advanced options is a setting for restrict to channel, set this to 101
Eastenders will now only record on BBC 1 HD
Yeah thats the workaround I’m using, but doesn’t really answer the question why Plex thinks programming on an HD channel is broadcast in SD format (which it isn’t). Also makes the ‘prefer HD’ option a little pointless!
Thanks. I didn’t know that workaround. Seems to work for new recordings. Existing series links seem to still suggest they’ll record on the SD channel despite the change, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for what happens with this evenings recordings.
@scarrison in my experience there is no real way to get the attention of Plex (who don’t seem to care for the experience of their actual users at all) to take anything seriously. If this topic catches the eye of one of the few people that actually seem to be bothered about fixes then we might have a chance.
BBC 1 HD (Title that the BBC uses) is just a description, this could easily have SD & HD content on it
If the content on the channel is not flagged as HD, Plex will never see it as HD
As far as Plex is concerned, 001 & 101 are identical, so when you schedule a recordings it gets the first one it sees (001)
If any of you use schedules direct as an xml (same as gracenote plex uses), it might show which field needs to have an HD episode flag on it
Interesting point but the channels are flagged as HD via a flag in plex (that I have no control over!), and in my tvheadend backend so I’m not sure why it should be totally reliant on EPG-flagging of HD episodes.
