Private Section - XXX content

Am I the only one that is confused and probably disappointed by the announcement of Plex Home? https://blog.plex.tv/2014/11/20/introducing-plex-home/

As far as I can tell you can restrict content for a managed user by label or rating, but not library. Do I really need to go an label all content I wan't hidden? Thanks.

you can just say they have access to a particular library exactly like when you share with anyone . if you have a whole library of only porn then uncheck it.

in this image MyChild only has access to the Cinema Library

When creating a managed user you specify which libraries they have access to - for example my Kids managed user has access to only Kids TV and Kids Movies sections.

@BigWheel, @Chris_Searle, thanks for your help and I'm pleased to see it is possible. It is also how I imagined it would be implemented.

I've checked my server and something is wrong. I do not have the same options as BigWheel's screenshot.

For example, I have Movies, TV Series, Family and Test Library. When I try to create a managed "Test User" I'm only able to select Movies and TV Series libraries, the other two Family and Test Library don't appear. See screenshots below.

Libraries listed when creating a new managed user

I'm running server version 0.9.11.4 on Ubuntu.

Update 1:

Oddly I've tried it again with another user and I'm now able to see all my libraries.

BUT when I switch to that user I'm still able to see and access all libraries. It is all Fubar :(

Will create a proper support post instead of continuing to post here. Thanks for everbody's help.

New Plex user here, I googled this topic and this thread was the first result to show up...  While reading through this thread, what bothers me more than the lack of a function to pin/pass protect a library, is the way the moderator "BigWheel" is talking to the Plex community.  What is with the attitude man?  You obviously enjoy Plex and enjoy the community, or you wouldn't still be here after signing up in 2008.  If you care so much about the community, lose the attitude.  There's no need for it.  You seem like a cool guy, but I think your heads in the wrong place.  These forums are pretty much the only outlet we have as users and fans of Plex to share are thoughts, concerns, ideas, etc..  I read all 8 pages of this thread, and for the most part nothing anyone said was out of line to make you talk to the fan base like that.  If you truely want to support Plex and it's community, try to talk to us in a more sensible way.

With all that said, it is really disheartening to see that after the 3+ years that this thread has been up, there is still no function to password protect a specific library.  Yes there are "workarounds", but it's still not perfect.  And yes, as a developer myself "BigWheel", I know all about how difficult these things can be to implent.  That said, 3 years is ample enough time to develop such a feature, especially considering it's a feature this user-base has been clamoring for.

Looks like Plex is getting closer with each update, but still, not there yet.  The day this feature arrives, regardless of if it is a paid or a free feature, I will be buying my lifetime membership.  Otherwise, freeware it is.

What i don't enjoy is people barking orders as if they are Members of the Board of Directors. the feature exists now. you can hide your porn. move on.

for support this idea, about having certain libraries password protected

Options to restrict content already exist. Either by separate user accounts or using Plex Home.

It's actually explained on this page ->             #141

I just want to weigh in here as a member who would like this feature and also understands the complexities of implementing such a feature. Yes the multi-user feature can sort of accomplish this, but it doesn't fulfill the need expressed here in the thread. I think the multi-user feature is amazing and a great addition that covers most user's issues with parental control. However, this thread isn't just about parental control, it is about using plex to organize adult libraries (porn) and restrict its visibility when not wanting it exposed.

I completely agree with plex's developers policy of not listing timelines as I (as a fellow developer) believe it  reduces 1.) rushing things to production before they are done and 2.) stress on the developers to meet arbitrary deadlines. This is a great policy that creates better software. Yes it sucks for users that want to hear what they can expect from new software, but they can just wait for the latest release and read what awesome things they just got.

Per BigWheels handling of this thread (yes there was a reason why I quoted BigWheels) I think your handling of this thread could have been done with much more tact. Actually, any tact. Yes most people are dicks and complain about anything they can't have immediately. Sure this thread has been open for years and a work around is available. I call it that because, honestly, the original issue hasn't been addressed. The community can be anything from civil to right down obnoxious. Work a little on deescalating the situation instead of poking the fires. If your time is so precious that you feel you have to be so abrupt, you might want to consider that.

Thanks to everyone working on the app and supporting it. It is an amazing feat.

Hi everyone.
I have found that the best way to completely hide the xxx content from unwelcome eyes, is to have a totally separate PMS for this content. I have solved it by running a virtual box with Linux, and inside that virtual machine have PMS running. Not the simplest solution, but a effective one, because it works perfectly.
When we want to watch Porn, we only login to a separate plex account, and voila.

Seriously… a Five Year Old Thread.
Ugh.

For me? I’d like ot have the option of the content being password protected period… you could password protect ANY folder you create… If you make an adult movies folder it is password protected or not…

Five year old thread yes but the issue hasn’t been resolved…

Plex is my Media Server. It serves ALL my media. When guest come to my home and watch from Plex they have access to all my media unless I don’t use plex for what it is intended. I have family photos on their that I don’t want just anyone to see. I have home movies etc. I have scanned documents that are in the drive where my photos are (ie my wedding album has scanned marriage documents stored in the same folder). I have had surgeries and there are photos of that too. If Plex aims to service all my media needs it needs to work harder. I don’t want everyone to have access to all my music either. Why? Not anyone’s concern but mine. Porn? Yup it’s there too.

My solution: Since I have Roku tv’s I just put all the stuff I think is important on a different medai server application. Yup, the best way is not to use plex.

While I agree with many of the post on this thread (yes I know it a few years old).

What I have come up seems to work so I figured i would share it.

sensitive material ( eg porn ) has its own library. I also have all the items in that library rated (NC-17, US based here ) along with the content containing tags in Plex and also genre on the videos themselves as “adult” This also has been configured to not show up in the home screen so no recent added and continue watching

the other approach I have been playing with is separate accounts (one for the house that is not the admin account , and one for each child. Also have a collection of friends and family as well). All using separate Plex.tv accounts and the pin concept of Plex home will just not work ( sorry kids can figure out smart phones an access pin is no different.

each account is granted access to the only the libraries that are suitable very few accounts have access to the adult library I also limit the accounts using the ratings as well.

I am always looking for opinions on this approach that is why I am posting it.

Since I have set this way I have all the content in Plex but limit who can see what and from where. Happy to describe any part in more details if that would help anyone. There is always room for improvement from Plex but this does seems to meet the needs.

Wow! Jan 2011… Old thread indeed. The only approach I like is separate libraries and separate accounts. I don’t like the idea of doing two things(name the file, edit stuff in plex).
And my biggest issue with tags is you may get kicked in the face with it.
Real life example The Walking Dead TV-Y

My 2cents…Thanks!!

Agreed @NewPlaza that is why I use all three ( separate library , accounts and tags ) because I have seen the same fun with tags that I put on something incorrectly. Given the separate library most of my tag problems have been limited. also most of my tv content is really old shows that pre date most of the rating systems any way
