Problem: “App cannot direct play this item. Direct play is disabled" on Plex for Roku

I upgraded from v1.25.3.5409 server to the latest version and started getting “App cannot direct play this item. Direct play is disabled" on Plex for Roku for several 4k movies. Not all, but several. I uninstalled the latest version and reinstalled v1.25.3.5409 and the problem went away.

Any suggestions?

I haven’t got an answer, but I’ve also seen this error a couple of times now. Not 4K content, just SD for me so far. Skip to the next episode and it’s fine. I’ll have to have a closer look at the files to see if there is any difference in the encoding.

So this is odd, i am seeing the following in the log when i attempt to play a certain few files. The odd thing is it worked just fine on at least 1 of these files last week.

I’ve played several 4K movies on my Roku with Windows as server with no issue.

First thing to rule out would be picture-based subtitles. Roku is one player that cannot direct play them.

Also the video codec for 4K content must be HEVC/x265.
