Problem with Plex on Sony Bravia X900H TV

Hi all, I have the Sony Bravia X900H TV and i am trying to play a movie from the plex app on this tv. Plex is seeing my plex server but regardless of what movie i play, it says “an error occured while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”. My tv is connected to my network using a wired connection and tv is getting an ip address. What could be the problem?

Plex Media Server version?
Plex Android TV client version?
Available via Authorized Devices: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/all

PMS version: 1.20.1 (from my qnap nas)
plex android tv version: 8.22.0.27533

There is a problem with current Android TV clients and older versions of Plex Media Server.

1.18 and 1.19 are definitely affected. I do not know if 1.20.1 is affected.

The workaround is to disable secure communications between the client and server.

Updating to a current PMS release solves the problem. Note that 1.20.1 was released in Aug 2020. You may wish to update to a current release (1.24.2.4973). There are many enhancements and bug fixes (see release notes).

This post has additional details, including how to tell if you’re running into the same issues as people on 1.18 & 1.19 (you have to look at the Android TV log file):

ok so I updated the plex server through the NAS and now the problem is fixed. Thanks. new problem is that now when I access my plex server or even the plex player through my windows 10 pc or the plex player on the Sony TV, the movies don’t show the proper cover picture on it. They all show a random clip from the movie. this only happens to the movie library. I have another library for TV shows and another one for audio demos and they all show the proper picture. I tried restarting the NAS but it stills it like this. how do I fix that?

update: I did a refresh metadata on the movies library and that fixed it. so why did this happen in the first place after updating my plex server? and why only to the movies library?

Thanks for this - totally sorted my problem too.

It seems a new Google tv update has changed something between the Plex client and server. It’s probably affecting the group of people using NAS (which are still running 1.18) and Sony tellys. The manual update solves this in 2 mins though.

Thanks!
