Problems with Spectrum Cable TV

My brother can access my server via his pc, but when he logs in on his TV (Spectrum Cable) my server does not appear. We are friends, He does have access according to my server. He is using the correct account info.

Also everytime he doesnt automatically log in to plex on his tv (if he manually logs in, inputting his user and pass it requires him to put in a code on his phone as if he is setting up the account on the tv for the first time,

Is that the brand of the TV device?
If that is the case, I assume that this is running a specially restricted version of the Plex app, which is only able to use the ad-supported streaming media from plex.tv, but cannot access personal plex servers.

“Spectrum Cable” is not a brand that I recognize: https://support.plex.tv/articles/204080173-which-smart-tv-models-are-supported/

That is his cable company, he is using a roku tv that i gave him that had plex already in the apps. but he has been using the spectrum remote instead of the roku/tv remote as i suggested he use. Yes i believe he is accessing Plex through their app in their system rather than the one built into the tv, because the look is different.

But he has accessed my server in the past via spectrum i believe but he has since had a problem and had to switch tvs. He was then having problems accessing his account so he made another (we didnt know certain tvs or companies may or may not allow access).

The TV is accessible, i am using the same brand (I believe its ONN), but i believe he is accessing it through his cable company which is causing some conflict.

That means he is using the Roku as a player and the type of TV is irrelevant. The TV is only a display for the Roku.

I’m not sure what you mean by “the TV is accessible”. As stated before, it should have no influence on Plex whatsoever, since Plex is handled solely on the Roku.

ONN is a brand of roku tv. There should be no issues with his tv being able to access my server, our houses are loaded with the same tv’s. The one difference is that he has a cable TV service (Spectrum). The Plex app he is using is not simply on the tv’s main screen of “apps” as mine is, it is on a page in his cable tv package, not sure it matters or not. Anyway the TV shouldnt be an issue, the conflict i believe is somehow related to his cable tv service.

So you are saying that you gave him this TV, which has Roku built in?
Still, the remote control should make no difference.

What can make a difference is domain name filtering, which is sometimes applied by ISPs. Comcast might do it as well.
If he has access to that setting in his router, let him try to change the “DNS Server” setting to either 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8
These are known-working DNS resolvers with no excessive filtering.

Now that i think about it, he had access to my server on his previous tv which did not have roku built in, he used a fire stick and his cable service didnt stop that…

I think changing the router DNS is beyond him, im not sure he even has the info to look it up. Ive only done it a few times myself.

If he still has that stick, let him try it.

It was just pointed out to me that the Comcast X1 box itself may have a Plex app of its own as well.
If he uses the remote of that X1 box, he might actually not be using the Roku app of the TV, but the Plex app of the cable box. Which might have restrictions which the Roku app in the TV might not have. It might be this one: https://support.plex.tv/articles/plex-for-x1-overview/

So make him use the Roku remote, not the one of the cable box.

Thats what i have been trying to tell him. Not sure how it will navigate around the cable or not ill get him to try it
