Hello fellow Plexians,
I am a big airplane fan and own a ton of aircraft DVDs. Each of those DVDs focuses on one topic like a certain aircraft, flight training or theater. Examples:
\Warbird Videos
\Advanced Flight Training with the North American AT-6
Before You Fly.m4v
Crosswind Approaches, Landings and Take-Offs.m4v
Emergencies.m4v
Fudamentals of Formation Flying - Three Plane and Four Plane.m4v
Small Fields.m4v
Take-Offs, Approaches and Landings.m4v
The Barrel Roll.m4v
The Wingover Roll.m4v
Wingovers and Chandelles.m4v
\Airstrike Vietnam
Air Power at Khe Sanh.m4v
FAC F-100 Supports US Army.m4v
Tactical Air Power.m4v
The Twenty Five Hour Day.m4v
The USAF in Vietnam.m4v
[…]
I would really like to add all those films to my Plex collection. However, neither the movie nor the TV Shows library works well for them as I would like to store them in a structure something like \Warbird Videos\Airstrike Vietnam\ and then the films.
How can I achieve this and what naming conventions if any do I need to follow?
Thanks a lot!
why not just a Home Videos Library and view by folder. You can name the library whatever you want (probably Warbird Videos). It will just use the file names ( or embedded metadata) for titles. You will have to add summaries and such anyway manually
/Warbired/Airstrike Vietnam/airpower
where “Warbird videos” is the folder you add to the library configuration
when you view by folder you will see the Airstrike Vietnam folder and the other top level ones you can dig into to see the films.
Hello BigWheel!
Thank you for your reply. I tried the Home Videos option. However, when I do that the videos are all displayed in an ungrouped fashion and the folders are totally ignored. Can you tell me what to change to have the videos grouped by folder like I explained in my initial post?
Thank you!
I take it back… I just re-read your post and only now noticed your “by folder” comment. I had never used that setting before. Activating that actually did the trick and now the videos are just that… displayed by folder.
Thank you!

One caveat, which may not matter depending on your folder structure: In Folder view, all folders are displayed, even if they contain no matching file types. For example, I have my digital photographs and videos (taken with the same camera) stored in the same folders. I take very few videos, so many folders will have only photos, and no videos. I created a Home Video library pointing to the same Photography folder as my Photo library, which correctly finds all those videos. But if I view by Folder, I see every folder under the Photography folder, even if there are no videos in the folder.
As I said, this may not matter in your case, but it is a shortcoming that you should be aware of.
