I want to create, edit, and remove music playlists on my iPad. In order to do so, I need to use three apps as described below. It would be great if the playlist experience was the same across all players.
Plex App
Can create playlist from song. Can not name the playlist when it’s created. Can not create new empty playlist. Can not edit name of playlist. Can not delete playlist. Can not add songs to playlist from the playlist.
Plex Amp App
Same as Plex App but can name the playlist (only) when it’s created. Can not add currently playing song to a playlist.
Plex Web (Safari)
Can create playlist from song. Prompted to name the playlist when it’s created. Can not create new empty playlist. Can edit name of playlist. Can delete playlist. Can not add songs to playlist from the playlist.

Can not name the playlist when it’s created.
Playlist creation allows you to select to which server the playlist should be added (in case you have more than one). If you create a playlist from a single song/album/… Plex will offer that song/album’s name as default playlist name. Simply click on that name to change it (lighter grey bar below the location selection).
Can not create new empty playlist
Correct. Plex doesn’t really like empty playlists… I have a hard time seeing that use case myself

You can delete playlists using the Delete button from within that playlist. If it’s not visible right away you can swipe down a bit to get to the very top of the page.
Can not add songs to playlist from the playlist
You can long-press every item of a playlist… this will bring up a context menu from where you can add that song/video to another playlist (new or existing)
Plexamp
Same as Plex App but can name the playlist (only when it’s created
You’re right, you cannot create empty playlists, delete nor rename them.
Same as described for the Plex app above you can add a song from a playlist to another playlist using the ⋮ context menu of that song)
Can not add currently playing song to a playlist
Long-press the details section (album name / song title / artist name / format / rating), select Add to Playlist from the context menu
This is how my partner thinks: “hmm I just made a playlist called 80s hits. I’d like to have 90s hits and 70s hits as well: then when I see a 70s track I can add it to the list as a one click”
Some people pre construct the filing system and then put things in the initially empty categories. You just said “that’s not how I think about it” but more importantly it’s not how plex is designed to work.
I wish it was. There is an obvious workaround so I wouldn’t pretend my partner cannot do things albeit not how they initially think about it.
Same. I’ll know I want some playlists and want to ‘bookmark’ the idea. So as I play music I can add songs to an already existing playlist. I’m rarely, if ever, listening to a song and think of a new playlist it should be a part of.
It’s not a huge issue but it doesn’t seem like a huge issue to allow for blank playlists either. It’s a feature that exists on other music players that’s lacking in Plex (seemingly due to developer’s personal preferences).
Yea, “empty sets” are a pretty basic meta concept. Some people model the world by making categories before they start assigning things into them: as it stands, plex doesn’t do that.

Its 2023 and we have been wanting playlist support since 2014 and nothing has materialised in plex. EVEN Jellyfin has some form of playlist support. I want to be able to import and export my music playlists to m3u files. Why is this so hard?
