Ok, this may be weird but… I changed the DNS on my PS5 and issue gone.
I use 1.1.1.1 on my router and everything buffered like crazy. Changed it to 8.8.8.8 on the PS5 only, buffering gone. Weird but can’t argue with the results.
Also, before the change a 4K HEVC file transcoded, now it doesn’t.
Got the same issue with my PS5. Direct playing a 4K (8.9Mbps bitrate) on the PS5 leads to a buffer then crash after a few seconds.
Going through the internet instead of local is already a problem on PS5 Plex, but now it is getting annoying. Can someone from plex give us some news on a fix ?? It’s been a year…
Hi all,
Same problem here. Plex works perfectly on everything except PS5. I wonder if the PS4 app version would work better if it was made available for the PS5?
I DID however manage to sort this out for myself by changing the below settings on the server:
Go to Settings > Transcoder
Show Advanced in the top-right of the window
Transcoder quality = Make my CPU hurt (this could possibly be set to something less aggressive but I was sick of the issue after a year, and can afford to use this since I’m running a Synology NAS purely for Media Server purposes)
Transcoder default throttle buffer = 600 (10 minutes - again, I can afford the resources)
Background transcoding x264 preset = Medium (was previously Very fast - not sure if this is the default setting or not)
I’ll keep monitoring for the next few weeks and see if this truly has sorted it out.
Unfortunately not the outcome I thought I had with early testing.
Found an interesting pattern though… It freezes half way between the point of starting and where the video ends.
For example, if the video is 20mins long it will freeze at 10 minutes left, then 5, then 2:30, 1:15 etc…
Just bizarre behaviour, but I hope this might help Plex investigate for what it’s worth.
I notice the exact same thing. It stops halfway through a video. In my case 720p MKV. Then incrementally halfway through the rest. This just started happening (again). It seemed resolved for a year or so. I am going to try your settings above and see the result. Maybe has to do with the 1.24 → 1.25 release. Very frustrating.
WOW! Now I know not to worry about my PS5. LOL! I love how it makes sports look so much better on Youtube TV versus my Nvidia Shield Pro. Figure same thing with movies, but I started to realize it’s hanging up on so many movies. Especially huge 4k flies, forget about it, and don’t even try fast-forwarding. LOL! The Shield still zips through all these same files with no issues. Glad to know I’m on the same boat as many of you.
I’m on the PS5 beta and not sure if it’s the latest version of PMS or this, but 720p doesn’t play at all now, PS5 info just shows a stupidly high bitrate when playing at 720p but ok when below that!
It will never make sense that the PS5 is considered one of the most powerful gaming computers, but PLEX works best on a Nvidia shield. If this is a case of Sony not being co-operative with PLEX, then they should be embarrassed. That I have to play around with direct stream/play check boxes or worse, knock the quality down a step so it transcodes to get movies to play on my PS4 and PS5 is bananas.
For me, the shield is the defacto way to use Plex. I’ve had ps4/5, firetvs, rokus and all of them had a way worse experience than the shield. I just recently commented in another thread where we seem to have found that PS5 transcoding has entirely broken between PMS version 1.25.6.5577 and 1.25.3.5409. I didn’t even notice this was an issue since I always use my shield when given an option. It was only when one of my users reported it to me that “the plex server has been down for a month now”. I loaded up my own PS5 and sure enough, was able to reproduce the issue instantly.
Honestly, just save yourself the wear and tear on your (expensive) console and just use a dedicated streaming device. For a way worse experience, you’re subjecting your console to undue stress. I could reason using a console if the user experience were way better, but it’s actually way worse.
A new PS5 system software update is out and Plex still buffers constantly for anything above 17Mbps or when transcoding audio. Fortunately it still works fine on my “unsupported” Tivo. We’re also approaching one year since a Plex employee said “we expect a fix with a future PS5 firmware update but I don’t have any further details to share right now.”
