I encode to H.264 and what I’ve found is that it’s related to the bitrate. Over roughly 17 Mbps and it will buffer.

I’m seeing the problem now way more than I did prior. Pretty much nothing plays without buffering unless I drop the video quality down by one so that it’s transcoding.

So am I now. Having the issue on files I didn’t before.
If I force the quality down, like you say, then it transcodes and works.
Something very wrong with the PS5 app, for sure.

Have the same issue! Direct stream perfectly works on PS4 pro, and doesn’t work at all on PS5. Every minute it buffers something. If I set lower quality, the transcoding starts to work, but I don’t want to transcode, just want the direct stream as it is on PS4 Pro the main reason is because lot’s of movies show artifacts with transcoding. @Moussa any updates on direct stream on PS5?
So there appears to be a PS5 update so we can now search streaming services, but I still can’t direct play videos. The playing my home media library is the service I paid for.
We really need an update on this.
The problem isn’t the PS5 app, it’s the Plex Server.
You need to downgrade to a previous version. I’m using 1.25.5.5492 and it’s working fine again.

Agreed. There must be a fundamental issue with the PS5 hardware and plex as this saga is now well over a year old. If the admins would just provide an actual update. Put me out of my misery waiting for a fix at least.

The problem is definitely with PS5, or Plex+PS5. Bacause I have a router connected to PC, PS4 and PS5. All devices with WIRED(RJ45 Cat 6) connection. The Direct stream on PS4 works perfectly, on PS5 doesn’t work at all, if the media file is more than 20gigs. It buffers every 10 seconds, but why it buffers, if I choose the direct stream option?? Of course the direct play is coming from the same PC to both playstations. I’ve tried million different combinations with wires(replaced the cables with 5 cat.), even tried with different router nothing helped. PS4 works all the time just perfect, PS5 does not. This is really strange and I honestly don’t understand why it is so difficult to fix the issue. A whole year has passed…

Not surprising but the latest PS5 firmware update did nothing to fix the buffering issues with Plex.
Just chiming in again. Still broken and probably has been since somewhere between these versions:
PMS version 1.25.6.5577 and 1.25.3.5409

The only way I can get a show to start playing on PS5 is to select any other Quality other than the Default one no matter if that default is 1080p or 720p or what.
This started happening after a Plex Server update a few months ago and no update has fixed it since. I guess they are too busy making sure you can add all of your other streaming services into Plex.

I’ve found that to be the case for me to. The problem with that is I have some older, lower quality divx/WMV files that can’t be knocked down a quality level to transcode. They are completely unplayable.

Same here. I have files that if I choose transoding they broke(show green artifacts), but when streaming they work 30 seconds nice and then an infinite buffering happens…and again this NEVER happens on PS4, only on PS5…

Fun thing with this streaming gimmick. You can add digital media to a watchlist using plex in your windows browser that’s accessible from the home screen, but on the PS5/PS4 you can’t access the files on your server through the app. Rendering the feature useless outside of seeing which companies stream the title. (You can’t access the streams either on the PS4/5 but you can see where to find them. It’s dumb.)

This is well beyond a joke at this point.
Many files are unplayable; most require workarounds like disabling Direct Play; and some others also require transcoding down a quality level (making them look horrible) to maintain an acceptable frame rate.

It’s pretty cool that one of the most powerful consoles ever made can’t paly an standard def file through PLEX anymore since older files can’t have the resolution reduced. Quite the accomplishment.
I downgraded PMS from version 1.26.0.5715 to 1.25.5.5492 and 1.24.5.5173 but the buffering is still there. I must say that the best version is 1.25.5.5492 because at least the video is playing for a couple of minutes. On 1.24.5.5173 it’s buffering almost immediately.
