PS5 - stuttering direct stream

Glad a fix is on the way, haven’t turned my PS5 on in a few weeks because of this, and kept the XSX I was planning to scalp because of it. Pretty bummed about not using the PS5 for now.

My experience is that once “Allow Direct Stream” is unchecked, the stuttering actually stops and it’s watchable for a few minutes. However, a “buffering” message pops up every few seconds despite my plex server being less than 10% CPU usage and on wired gig eithernet.

Looking forward to the fix!

Thank you Moussa. I saw in another thread there are small updates coming and a bigger one after working with Sony. Hope you can tell us more soon. We appreciate your work and look forward to using Plex on our PS5s for years to come!

Hi all. A release just went out with a fix for a particular case of stuttering with direct streams. Interested to hear if it improves things for you. We’re still working on fixes for other reported issues around playback.

Fantastic to hear Moussa!

Is this live on PS5 now? I’ll happily test and get back to you.

Yes, it’s live now.

Moussa,

How long does it normally take before we should see the update? The PS5’s ‘Information’ for the installed app shows it at v1.000.000 with no updates available.

Within the app itself, the Client Version = 5.6.1; Platform Version = 2.30

Thanks

Direct play appears to be buffering and stopping for me, this is with a 720p video files, the moment I switch off to transcoding it, plays without an issue. Just to add some clarification, this is on a local plex server, not remote. It does appear LG TV can do this no issue on same network through the same router, etc. It does appear its acting a lot better with direct play with 4k, not stuttering BUT when the circle buffer wheel happens, it freezes – plays – freezes, then eventually never recovers back to playing normally(This is with 4k content and other lower video quality content).

Moussa,

Stuttering appears to be fixed for me, thanks so much!

CV 5.7.1
PV 2.30

Stuttering fixed here!

Had to close and open the app again for the version to update.

App updated. v5.7.1, Platform Version 2.30

While the stuttering seems to be fixed, it still constantly buffers. Is there some magic combination of settings that makes this work? With both ‘Allow…’ setting checked even HD titles play for a few seconds then begin to buffer, then hang. Unchecking ‘Allow Direct Play’–same effect. When both are unchecked, the HD titles will play, but they constantly buffer.

5.7.1 and 2.30 here as well. Stuttering is gone but like previously mentioned occasional buffering circles appear for s few seconds now and then. So not flawless yet.

Hi Moussa, trust you are well. I don’t seem to have the app update available as yet. I’m based in South Africa. Will it be rolling out to all regions?

It didn’t come through as a normal PlayStation app update, just FYI. Simply restarting the app made it update for me.

You should see version 5.7.1 in the About section if its updated.

Ahh, thanks. Was expecting an app update. My client version has been updated to 5.7.1 so I’m assuming all good. Will test as well and advise…

Hi Moussa, trust you are well. Just providing some feedback on the client version 5.7.1. update. Unfortunately stuttering continues on content running more than 10Mbps on PS5. Tested the same content on my PS4 and it runs smoothly with no buffering or stuttering. Content streaming at 15.9Mbps 4K. Hope the feedback helps.

I would like to give feedback but my app won’t update… Is there any delay for some countries?

Just in case you didn’t see my earlier reply.

Wanted to add more test results.

My stuttering is 100% gone. I recognize that that is what this thread is covering, but since you’ve replied here and people are leaving feedback I thought I would do the same.

I have not run into any continuous buffering issues on media that is ~15mbps, currently testing one that is 20.8mbps and so far no buffering there as well. I did however run into continuous buffering issues on a file that is 86.3mbps. To rule out it was a result of audio transcoding I downloaded a 120mbps sample video from https://jell.yfish.us/ and also ran into the same issue followed by the app completely locking up. This is running on a wired 1gbps network, I’ve tested the network connection the PS5 has and it should be more than capable of handling a file at those rates.

edit: Wanted to add that I did find an issue on my network that may have caused my NAS to transfer at 100mbps and not 1gbps. Re-ran the above test and still the app locked up trying to play the 120mbps test file.

Hi Moussa, direct stream playing now works after new release. No stuttering. Thank you and the devs for this. Slight buffering issue even on direct stream, shows for a few seconds before going away. Occasionally comes back. Again, thank you for this fix.

Ok, stuttering no more! Thank you devs for your work on this issue!

Now, about buffering I think it got worse… Before I was able to watch 4K with 130+ mbps and now it wont play for a minute straight, I think it crashes.
I’ll run a few more tests.

Again, thank you!
