PS5 - stuttering direct stream

Still completely unuseable for me. Window 10 PMS. PS5 2.7.1.

Buffering seems to have gotten worse. Still stuttering at a few frames per second. Film library really struggles to load on the UI too.

I dont have an update available. Deleted the app then new download, still version 1.000.000

Just pasting my reply to someone else from above.

It didn’t come through as a normal PlayStation app update, just FYI. Simply restarting the app made it update for me.

You should see version 5.7.1 in the About section if its updated.

With the new plex ps5 version still unuseable.
No buffering but an turning circle…
With plex server on tv all is ok

I paid for lifetime plex pass, but the ps5 app has so many bugs, i can’t believe it…

Exactly the same for me as well. It seems to have gotten worse since the update. I cannot stomach anymore of the Netflix garbage. Please help!!

Hello, I’m getting same buffering for more than 12 mbps. I have videos requiring 20 mbps and the app just won’t run it for more than 25 seconds straight. Buffering and stuttering continuously. Please help guys
Tried the same videos to stream directly from my Samsung TV app and works just fine. Please fix the ps5 app.

When will be a fix available, that makes plex useable on ps5?
The last Update made it more worse…
I have paid for plex pass…

I think some of the issues we’re seeing are more complicated than it seems. In @Moussa post he references that some of the issues require them working closely with Sony. If I had to guess I’d say some of the OS level changes/restrictions on the PS5 have likely created more than a few of the issues we’re all experiencing, and I’d be willing to bet Sony isn’t about to make OS changes for Plex, and as a result Plex is expected to make changes to work around any new restrictions or issues posed by the OS. Given how long it’s taken, it’s probably safe to assume that a good number of those changes aren’t minor bug fixes.

It definitely sucks that we can’t use Plex on PS5 yet, but all we can do is have patience.

For those not aware, the same issues are on xbox x also. Its obviously due to being new devices.

No I don’t have to have patience. I pay for something. I expect a timely resolution.

What this shows is they did little to no testing and were more concerned with just getting and app fixed. @Moussa

We have had patience since November. They are paid for a service… deliver

Get over yourself. You pay money you get the server and various clients. Some client have bugs, it takes time to fix them.

I cant think of a single piece of software that is bug free. Sometimes they are minor bugs, sometimes they are major. If you are not happy then vote with your feet and go somewhere else.

After closing and reopening Plex on my PS5 the client version had updated to 5.9.1. I haven’t tested a bunch of movies but at least one movie that had obvious stuttering during playback now plays without the stuttering. So far Plex is now usable on the Playstation 5.

Edit: It was fun while it lasted. The movie I was watching randomly stopped playing and there’s a circle going around and around. The PS5 app may still not be ready for use.

Edit 2: The first movie played through fine after the playback error and now the second movie I’ve tried has also stopped with a playback error. The server status shows it’s buffering at the 27 minute mark which feels close to when the first movie had the same issue. I guess I’ll take any further buffering errors to another buffering specific topic.

i think that plex developpers do not care at all on playstation app.

ps5 is always buffering, even more than ps4 plex app

the reality today is that rasperry pi4 with libreelec and official plex plugin is working better with 4k hevc direct play, than ps4 or ps5. Even plex app on samesung low end tv can direct play 4k hevc mkv file without any buffering…

the plex developpers are not ashamed of delivering such a bad app on playstation to us.
a ps5 10 terraflops gaming machine buffering all the time with 4k hevc direct play. and it is not an internet issue.

they seem not ashamed at all that a poor raspberry pi is beating the ps5 app in buffering.

who wants a ps5 to transcode back to 1080p in order to be able to see 4k videos? i think no one.
ps5 app is certainly the worst plex app available on the market.

always and always buffering. as yoda said do or do not. there is no try.

You can’t compare pi to PS5. One is an open OS that people have been working with and creating libraries for for years, one has been available for less than a year.

There are clearly issues, you can see @Moussa making posts about them and acknowledging them. If they were simple fixes, we’d have them by now. In one of his recent posts he mentions that they’re working with Sony to address some of the issues we’re all facing (here).

i am not comparing pi to ps5, i am comparing plex application on pi ps5, and even samsung tizen plex app. even lg os web app is not buffering 4k videos.

the truth is here playstation app is unusable. it is a fact.

even ps4 pro 3 year old plex app is buffering 4k videos. the ps5 young app, is not an excuse. even the oldest one on ps4 has still buffering issues with 4k hevc files.

the problem is buffer on playstation.

From my personal experience PLEX PS5 app became better since initial PS5 release. Still some work to do but at least I can watch most of my videos which are below 20Mb/s bitrate, Higher than that occasional buffering occurs.

Well, you are. You’re suggesting that Raspberry Pi works so why doesn’t PS5 without taking into consideration that the platforms and the OS they run on are entirely different. The hardware isn’t the reason that buffering is happening.

The PS5 OS isn’t Raspbian or any Linux based distribution, it’s similar but interfacing with the hardware isn’t the same thing. My guess is that there are significant enough changes with things the PS5 OS allows apps to do (even in comparison to PS4) that Plex has to make changes to work the way the OS allows it to. I don’t know enough to say for sure, but I’ve worked with Linux before and I’ve worked with PS4 before, so I’m basing that on experience and not any first or second hand knowledge.

@papaBoogy 20Mb bitrate is too low. as a comparision 1080p full quality is around 40 Mb/s.

when you put a physical bluray in 4k on ps5, the bitrate may be greater than 100 Mb/s in some bursts.

@overlawled i am still comparing plex apps between different devices

i do not see any post suggesting sony is nerfing plex apps. So there is only 2 ways of seeing this.

  1. the coding of ps5 plex app buffering is really bad

or

  1. sony is intentionnaly limiting access to memory to apps

the same 4k video plays better on ps4 pro plex than ps5 plex.
i may say that ps5 is buffering twice as much as former ps4 pro

the only truth is the plex app on ps4 or ps5 whatever playstation device you use is buffering more than other devices running plex, for the same exact file.

From the thread I linked, bold text is my edit to emphasize the fact that there are issues between Plex and the PS5 OS.

Updates are coming, hold tight. There will be one or two fixes that address some playback issues on the PS5 in the next update, but we’re working on a larger update with Sony to address other reported issues.

@overlawled i hope sony and plex will fix that.

because it is really funny.

samsung plex tizen no buffering at all even with bitrate burst more than 100mb/s
and this 4k tv has only 1gigabit RAM…

rapberry pi 4b 4GB RAM slow SDCARD 1gb/s ethernet with plex no buffering at all.
lg webos tv buffering, a little bit buffering due to damned 100 mb only ethernet card. hardware limitation on bitrate. yes LG put only 100 mb ethernet cards in their tv. they are funny.
playstations buffering every 5 seconds , even with 1gb/s ethernet cards, when bitrate is more that 20Mb/s.

the funny thing is that playstation 5 has one of the fastest SSD on earth, 16GB GDDR6 RAM, WIFI 6, gigabit ethernet and plex is exhausted with a 25MB bitrate hevc file, like an old dog… it will be better that plex stops developpement on playstation… it is shamefull. i will not talk about larger bitrate files, it is a complete disaster, and unusable.

i do not know if i should cry or laugh… almost every plex app except playstation can handle 100 megabit/s bitrates , even on low end 600 $ 65 4k inch tv…

so this is facts.
