Question about movie collections

Since Emby and Jellyfin have the option to automatically pull movies into Collections using TMDB, how is Plex managing this…or does Plex even do this at all? I noticed that if you change the Agent to TMDB, Plex automatically recommends changing it back to the updated Plex agent. Its going to be a pain if I have to manually add all my movies that should be in a collection into one!!!

Please advise, and thanks for any help you can provide

@OttoKerner Yep…already saw that guide. But is the ONLY way for Plex to automatically create collections is by using the “smart collection”?

The default (recommended) plex agent uses TMDB for its metadata. Actually, technically, it uses its own metadata service (watch.plex.tv), but THAT site scrapes TMDB and TVDB and IMDB for its data. So ultimately, they both use the same source. IMO, there is no reason to use an old agent, as the default “Plex” agent works perfectly fine if your media is labeled right.

As for collections, Plex does do automatic collections. If you edit your movie library, click on the Advanced pane, then scroll down enough, you see a option labeled Minimum automatic collection size with a drop down next to it. If you set this to any number, Plex will automatically create a collection that the movie belongs to, and add that movie to it. This collection will automatically be filled with metadata like posters and descriptions. If you add a movie that belongs to that collection in the future, Plex automatically flags that movie with the collection tag as well.

If automatic collections is not working for you, then check a few steps to see what might be the issue:

  • See if it is even enabled. As stated above, edit the library and ensure automatic collections is enabled. Make sure you set the threshold low enough for your collection. I advse against setting it to 1 since that will create collections for movies like Spiderman into the Spiderverse, which have a sequel announced but not yet released.
  • Make sure you refresh the metadata of all movies in your library. If you previously had collections disabled, Plex did not fill the collections tag when it last pulled the metadata. A refresh should fix that.
  • If this fails to do anything, make sure the collections “tag” for your movies isn’t locked. If so, click the orange lock icon to disable the lock, and refresh again.
