Can I access Plex Pass, while offline, through the Amazon Fire Stick app? I really hate having to have my computer on while I’m watching Plex on tv. If Plex Pass means I no longer have to do that, I’m ready to sign up.
plex pass has nothing to do with offline or online.
if you watching content on your fire stick/tv that is coming from plex server on your computer, then your computer of course must be on.
if you are watching content from the ‘web shows’ or ‘podcasts’ or ‘news’ that does not need a server, then you do not need your computer on.
if you are watching content from someone else’s server (ie someone invited you to their server), then you do not need your computer on.
otherwise, you need to better describe what you are trying to accomplish or do.
Thanks for the reply. So I have to have my computer on, even with Plex Pass. I saw something in the advertisement about accessing your media offline with Plex Pass, but I guess it only applies to mobile? I thought maybe the premium version let you access media offline via the cloud. I guess not.
plex used to have a ‘cloud’ plex, where you could upload content and watch without a server, but it didn’t work very well and was shut down a couple years ago.
there are hosting companies which will sell you a ‘virtual server’ which can potentially run plex, but those are not free and potentially require a lot of know-how to setup and run on your own.
Thanks for clarifying. It’s a shame they abandoned the cloud project and I hope they’ll revisit it someday soon.
I’m not even a little bit tech savvy, so I’ll forgo messing with virtual servers.
If you want a low powered server device and have a relatively small library, you might investigate the nvidia shield.
it works as both a client and server (better as a client though).
its not a perfect device by any means, but if you don’t want to run your computer all the time, a shield is cheaper than a mini pc (unless perhaps you can find a decent used one somewhere), and you can attach a usb drive with all your stuff on it.
if you do decide to use a shield for a server, I would highly recommend getting the version with the built in hard drive, just to keep it simple and avoid running out of internal space.
