Hi,
Synology has a winner with the quickconnect feature, that allows anyone, public IP or not, static IP or not, to access its own NAS no matter where you are, and it is bulletproof, so you don’t need to be an expert in networking to make it work. I find myself struggling to reach the Plex server from the outside. I have a public static IP, port forwarding everything, and it worked for a while, but I had to change my router and again, it doesn’t work. Since I have the plex server on my synology, it would be amazing to reach it just using the quickconnect as I do with everything else in my NAS.
Best regards,
Synology can do that, but (putting on my programmer hat here) I see three problems with that.
- They clearly spent some time and effort to program it. Plex may not have that kind of resources to dedicate to a quick connect feature.
- I would guess that for Synology you do it by going to some centralized Synology web site and they connect you with your data at home? This means that to do it with Plex you’d have to be streaming all your data from home to plex.tv, then back to wherever you’re connecting from. Not only is this less of an issue with Synology - you usually aren’t accessing streaming media so it’s not urgent if the access is a little slow or not an even speed - but many people want a great deal of privacy in what they’re watching with Plex, and streaming it through a third party wouldn’t meet that goal.
- The existing Plex solution uses direct connect - Both your server and your client talk to Plex.tv, which tells them about each other, then your client talks directly to your home - which offers both a certain amount of privacy and a speed advantage in streaming. It could theoretically do it the same way but through some port that’s not blocked by standard firewalls, but this would essentially be a security hole.
For these reasons it will surprise me if they implement your desired feature.
Hi, tks for your comments. Actually, each synology app has its own port, and yes, you can use DS Video and stream anywhere using quickconnect. The thing is I like Plex way too much, it is way better and DS Video…or DS Audio.
The thing is that making Plex Server work from outside requires a lot of config, and usually it doesn’t work (I had to hire a public IP to make it work, for example). I understand your point but well, one can only dream right?
Update: I just tried Emby, and without using quickconnect, it is way easier to use it from outside…took less than 10 min, just creating a login name that is available with the gold membership…so, something like that for Plex would be awesome.
