I actually found not rebooting was easier. all you need to do is close the plex app and it will auto relaunch and will detect new skins. (much like relaunching the windows/mac client)

  • To do this SSH into the PI
  • Enter the command "top -n 1"
look for the plexhometheater line, you want the Process ID (PID), in the shot below you can see mine is 3186 (This changes every time)
  • Enter the command "Kill 3186"
  • Wait a few seconds you will see RasPlex Loading screen
  • ???
  • Profit

I'm a little confused about where to put the downloaded skin. I have ssh'd into my device and downloaded the refocus blue  edition referenced in this thread. I move it into .plexht/addons and reboot the Pi, but  the skin doesn't show up. I then tried to put it  under  .plexht/addons/packages but still doesn't show up.  Am I doing something wrong? I just downloaded the skin and unzipped on my desktop and then moved the unzipped folder  to the .plexht/addons folder. What am I missing?

Have you created a folder inside .plexht/addons ?

I created 'skins' folder in there and put the refocus files in there and it appeared fine on a reboot. So files like 'addon.xml' appear in the root of 'skins'

You can call 'skins' whatever you like obviously.

I copied it across using Filezilla in SFTP mode

Is there going to be a installer for skins developed some time. I want to get rid of mediastream and try something new but I am more of a noob when it comes to terminal

Just use Cyberduck ;)

So am totally new to this whole SSH practice.  I can SSH in fine with putty I just have no idea how to navigate from there. Is there a good guide that can show me step by step, with commands to get a skin installed?   The OpenElec wiki keeps giving me a 403 for some reason.

Use a GUI interface to make it easier. i.e. SSH in with filezilla

see my post above for directories.

Hi

I have also tried out the reFocus for Plex "Back to Blue" Edition Skin and was very impressed (the Skin Dev was very helpful to fix some issues with his PHT version).

However, I can't see the entries/items under the Programs menu.

Does anyone know what needs to be done to get those to display in this skin as well?

Would be great if I could also run the rasplex update script directly out of that skin.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just a small bump to check if no one has either the same issue (nothing listed under Programs in the skin) or possibly a solution on how to make the update script show up there.

Thanks

The skin would need to be edited specifiably for use with rasplex, you could try asking the skin creator to make the changes but it would be better to wait until rasplex is out of beta.

Hi,

I've just tried the Simplex, Retroplex and ReFocus skins to check them for improved speed/performance compared to mediastream.

But it seems my expectations were high...

I was unable to identify improvements in terms of smoothness and speed related to mediastream...

Is this just me or is anyone able to observe a huge speed improvement by using a different theme?

(It seems the lack of smoothness and is not a skin issue. We need to work on the networking code to get this faster and smoother...)

I feel that ReFocus is far, far faster and smoother than Mediastream. I couldn't even get Retroplex to load, as I think its just too resource intensive for the Pi to handle.

I've tried the version from https://github.com/sandman4sure/skin.refocus_for_plex_back_to_blue_edition/tree/plex_ht. Are we talking about the same version of this skin?

Same here. Some things were a little faster, but others (On Deck and Recently Added, for example) were far slower.

Try pecinko's latest Amber release. Muy nice.

Probably the best one yet on the Ras.

Yes Amber really has made a huge difference to speed, even when solely running off sd.

I am new to Rasplex but not plex and PHM. I have added some extra skins with no problem. I can view the skins but if I reboot the rasplex with any of the extra skins selected, my Rasplex goes into an endless reboot loop. I have to manually remove the skin directory to get it back.

I'm loving Amber skin!!!

most have if wanna speed-up RasPlex

Just a fool proof tutorial, this is how i did it:

1. Instal RasPlex with one of the official intrallers: http://rasplex.com/get-started/rasplex-installers.html

2. Follow the wizard for RasPlex the first time and make sure you enable ssh and set-up a network connection.

3. Once RasPlex is launched navigate to Prefferences, RasPlex Settings, Network tab and write down the ip adres.

4. Browse with your PC/MAC to: https://github.com/W...ally.quartz.pht, press 'the zip icon' and save the .zip file.

5. Unpack the .zip file, you should now see the skin folder.
6. Open your SSH client (i'm using transmit) and set-up an SFTP connection:

Adres: your ip adres (from step 3)

Login name: root

Password: rasplex

Port: 22

7. Navigate to: /.plexht/addons and move the downloaded skin folder from step 5.

8. Reboot your Raspberry Pi

9. Choose prefferences, appearance and choose the downloaded skin.

10. Have Fun!

Sorry to be a complete noob, but I've managed to SSH into rasplex using Cyberduck, and I can't seem to find the /.plexht/addons folder in the storage folder.  What am I missing here?

I found it easier to SFTP (I am using FileZilla) into the RasPlex and then transfer the folder.
