Really need help with Remote Access

Server Version#: 1.13.6.176
Player Version#: Synology NAS DS118

Hi guys, i really need some help with Remote Access and i can`t figure out what is wrong in my setup and why Plex says remote access is denied. First i will tell you how i am connected and what devices in my setup.

  • Plex Media Server is running on a Synology NAS DS118 (i am using the beta version for ARM based NASes)
  • The NAS is connected with cable to my router
  • If i open Plex from the Synology, the web interface opens on my PC and it says that the NAS is connected and i can play all content without any issues.
  • I have made a port forward in the router for port 32400 as you can see in the screenshot.

My problem is that Plex says Remote Access is denied as shown in the screenshot.

But here is what confuses me, if i open up my Plex app on my iPhone and using the mobile network, i can play most of the media in Plex library, although it takes quite some time to buffer the video and i think there is also a message saying something like “this is not fully connected” or something like that.
I havn`t created any server connection in the Plex app so i am really confused how i am able to even play the media from there. Can someone explain this to me?

And please, if anyone can help me set up the Remote Access to work it would be much appreciated.

The indicator in the Plex settings can be a little behind.
If you can connect from the Plex Client on your mobile to the Plex server while you’re outside your home network (e.g. not connected to your WIFI), that basically means it’s working.

If it doesn’t, please check out if your router is actually accessible (e.g. using a service such as canyouseeme.org, using your public IP address and the public port used in the port forward).

Yes, i thought about the indicator being behind too but what i do not understand is how can i access the media on the mobile when i havn`t even created a server connection in the Plex app? That should not be possible right?

I tried canyouseeme.org but it says connection timed out so no luck there.

I just realised something that i also forgot to mention earlier, the router i use is a special type of VPN router whose main purpose is to encrypt all traffic with OpenVPN. So this means that all of my devices connected to the router share the same public ip number and i assume i also share this ip number with other people also connected to the specific VPN server used at the moment.

Could this be the reason why Plex says Remote Access is denied?

Ok, so i just switched VPN server to a static IPv4 address and now Plex shows Remote Access as accessible. So i guess this static address has all ports open and that explains why it was denied earlier when i used a shared VPN server ip number.

Problem solved.
