Realtek Android Set Top Box Client

Create a modified version of the Plex Android client with the Plex GoogleTV UI available for Realtek 1186 players which can run Android 2.x in the background. Realtek players are available globally and are cheap plus have codec support for almost everything Plex needs avoiding the need for transcoding.

The problem with the other various Android set top boxes out there is the Plex UI is not suited to control via traditional remotes, the Realtek 1186 players are media players first and foremost with regular remotes which makes them ideal for this plus they are all identical players no matter the brand. How much work would it be to bolt on a 10 foot UI to the Android Plex client ? hopefully minimal development work.

How to get the client well ideally Plex and Realtek would include it out the box as a stock app in their custom Android build but it is also possible to enable the Google market on these players so you could also make it available that way. I think these would greatly increase the usage of Plex given how popular Realtek players are & provide an option for those who want to avoid transcoding/Cinavia.

While the GoogleTV holds promise it’s availability is very poor being limited to North America. Google hasn’t exactly been pushing it further afield too much & although it might launch in the UK this September its a Sony set top box & Blu-ray player and that means it is certainly going to come with unpleasant Cinavia DRM built in too.

There’s a video demo here of Realtek 1186 player Android environment to get an idea, these boxes also come with a GPU too so hopefully Plex could run nice and fast on them.
