Reconnecting to Synology NAS

@ongcheeming

Sorry for the delay due to the holiday here.

This is a MAJOR problem which must be addressed before going any further.

The “Plex” shared folder is available for you to use but not PlexMediaServer,

I need you to create dedicated shared folders for your media and then move your media OUT of the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder.

As example, sifting through the shared folders on my development system, you can see I have dedicated shared folders for animated , movies, tv, and music.

You can use any naming & structure you want as long as it is out of the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

It’s so important you do this that I placed TWO FULL SETS of warnings to NOT place the media anywhere in there.

Please let me know when you have relocated your media

Ok, I have moved all the files out of the Plex folder. But I don’t see any Plex Media Server folder. Am I missing something?

This is my file station capture… the Plex folder is an empty folder after shifting all the media files out of it

  1. Login to your Synology.

  2. Open the Control Panel.

  3. Click on Shared Folder.

  4. Do you see a folder named PlexMediaServer (no spaces)?
If so, on which volume is it located?

Example from my Synology:

I don’t see any PlexMediaServer folder. There’s however a Plex1 folder which I moved my content out but the empty folder still has about 3 TB worth of content which I cannot access.

Thanks for the information.

What version of Plex Media Server is installed on your system, and on what volume?

  1. Login to your Synology.

  2. Open the Package Center. Select Installed.

  3. Select Plex Media Server. Click on the title, “Plex Media Server,” not the “Open” button.

  4. What is the Installed Version? On which volume is it installed?

Example from my Synology:

Please see screenshot… it’s installed in Volume 2.

Thank you for sharing.

You are using the BETA-DSM 7 version of PMS.

You need to stop using that version because it’s not compatible with DSM 7.0 in final release form.

What you have is from our initial development.

I would like you to go download from https://plex.tv/downloads and install it.

BE ADVISED

The installer is going to reconfigure your PMS installation (metadata) from the beta configuration to the final configuration.

This action is taken silently during the upgrade. It will sit there “Installing”.

Please don’t interrupt it. It is fully automatic.

It will move your metadata from the beta location to the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder (which is the new metadata location in DSM 7). The “Plex” share is free for you to use or delete as you wish.

When complete, You’ll see the new shared folder. It serves the same function as the old “Plex” share but with different structure and all of the restrictions enforced by DSM 7 .

If you want to read what changed from Beta → Final, please read here.

I installed from the link but the package is still the beta version. I tried to restart the NAS too but it did not change.

However, I noted if I right click on the Plex server icon on my bottom right active apps, I get this. Any clue what I did wrong?

@ongcheeming

That’s not Synology. That looks like Windows.

Yes, I told you that the DSM version did not change after installing. It is still beta… how so?

What does Package Center show?

You may say “Beta” , as in PlexPass/Beta, but from the Synology perspective, there is still a VERY OLD “real BETA” coming from the Synology Package Center which must be avoided. That version is 1.21.0.3744.

Still the same… that’s what is weird…

Did you download and install the Windows version of Plex Media Server on your PC?

You were supposed to download the Synology version from plex.tv and install it using the Synology Package Center.

What model is your Synology?

Indeed, I installed the Windows version.

How do I install the Synology version? I can only find the beta package there…

My Synology is DS920+

  1. Uninstall the Windows version of Plex Media Server from your PC. Technically, it does not hurt to leave it installed, but you do not need it.

  2. Using a web browser on your PC, download the Synology DSM 7 version of Plex Media Server for your DS920+ from the Plex website: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

  • Choose Synology (DSM 7)
  • Click Choose Package
  • Click Intel 64-bit

  1. Login to your Synology.
  2. Launch Package Center.
  3. Click Manual Install.
  4. Click Browse.
  5. Choose the file you downloaded from the Plex website.
  6. Click Next and proceed with the rest of the installation process.

See prior post from @ChuckPa regarding the upgrade process (link).

Ok, I managed to manually install the Plex Server.

However, I still don’t have my NAS contents loaded when I launch the Plex app.

I can now see a PlexMediaServer folder in Control Panel

And also in the file station

Following the instructions on message 15, I am attaching a log file…
Logs.zip (3.5 MB)

What else do I need to do next?

Point your browser at the Plex server and try to login & claim the server.

http://192.168.86.30:32400/web

That should be the IP address of your Synology. You can verify it by logging into the NAS and going to Control Panel → Info Center → Network.

I tried to log in and this is what I saw…

But after logging it, the results are the same. I still do not see my files in the NAS.

My NAS is not shown in the authorised device…

These are my two laptops.
