Description of the recorded TV program is missing on almost all recorded shows, while the description is perfectly visible in the guide when bringing up a show.
Makes it kind of a pain, for example, when bringing up a Nova episode from PBS, and you have no idea what it is about.
Occurs at least on Plex web and roku. I always update my server.
I have also included a clip from the guide from a Rick Steve’s episode from later tonight that I will record and show the description does not follow into the recorded show screen.
I posted the exact same problem a few weeks ago after upgrading to 1.26 and haven’t heard anything. Did a follow up post last night and still nothing… I downgraded to 1.25 and it’s working again.
To follow up, here is a screenshot of the Rick Steve’s recorded show. No description, while there was one in the guide.
I cannot find if there’s any facility in Plex support to actually log a bug? It seems like all we are able to do is post here and hope someone at Plex determines it is worthy of fixing?
I’m having this same problem, any fixes yet? It seems like some of my shows will display the description/thumbnail on the day they’re recorded, but then a small subset of those will lose those and go “generic” the next day.
I believe the issue is the guide EPG description isn’t carrying over once it’s recorded or is lost upon a library scan. I wouldn’t call it a bug, but a technical limitation based upon the data isn’t available.
A few things to keep in mind, once a show is recorded, the recording file is created in the library it’s assigned to and the plex metadata agent for the library is responsible for the metadata.
Depending on where the recording is saved, it may not follow plex’s naming structure. For example if all your recordings are dumped into one location, the naming convention for the scanner may fail. There are a few ways to manage it, but it depends on if you plan on saving the recordings - then save in the correct show structure. Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support
In cases of new recording for first aired shows, it’s more than likely the entry for the show isn’t available. It may take a day or more to become available depending:
on the agent used for the library
popularity of the show (i.e. themoviedb.org & thetvdb.org is crowdsourced for metadata – someone manually enters the information for descriptions and thumbnails)
*note: Depending on the contributor, the description may be different between the agents. Usually not a problem, but some contributors descriptions are better than others.
That being said, the quickest way to get the information would be to contribute to these services. I’ve contributed to these services for obscure/foreign shows that were not originally available… think of it as giving back.
If this is the case I would still call it a bug because my scanning parameters and locations have not changed for years, and the lack of description is only a recent event.
The show description is in the guide data. Not sure why Plex can’t transfer the show description from the guide to the show metadata after the recordings finishes.
This wasn’t an issue previously on recorded shows. It stopped adding the description a few releases ago.
The description that does get added is the show description not the episode description.
FYI, by following another thread, I made the change to my Recorded TV library I have and recorded some shows and they have descriptions now. I changed the scanner to Plex Series and TVDB from the Plex TV Series entry for both Scanner and Agent
However Plex now always shows an “Upgrade Libraries” notice in the activity arrow button. I can live with that.
